Description	:	Civil War veteran Private, Co. I, 18th Massachusetts Infantry William Allen Sturdy was the youngest of three children born to William H. and Mercy Ann (Keech) Sturdy, his father being a painter. His mother died of cancer when William was 16 years of age. William was a 21 year-old Jeweler from Blackstone, MA, when he enlisted at Dedham, MA on July 27, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. I, 18th Massachusetts Infantry William Allen Sturdy was the youngest of three children born to William H. and Mercy Ann (Keech) Sturdy, his father being a painter. His mother died of cancer when William was 16 years of age. William was a 21 year-old Jeweler from Blackstone, MA, when he enlisted at Dedham, MA on July 27, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. I. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm at Second Bull Run on August 30, 1862, a musket ball striking him five inches below the shoulder and causing nerve damage to the arm and hand. He was discharged due to disability from the U.S. General Hospital at Central Park, New York City on August 16, 1863. Following his military service, William resided at Blackstone, Attleboro, and Norton, MA from 1871, where he was a Jewelry Manufacturer. He married Rachel Pierce at West Brookfield, MA on May 1, 1867. They were the parents of William, born April 5, 1868 and died before 1873; Emily V., born July 26, 1879; Alice W., born Aug. 16, 1871; William M., born Sept. 26, 1873; Arthur T., born Nov. 28, 1875; Louis A., born April 4, 1877; and Harry P., born Dec. 31, 1879. William continued to reside at Norton, until about 1912, when he removed to Chartley, MA about 1912 to 1915. From about 1915 to May 1923 he resided Crescent City, FL, then returned to Chartley, MA, where he resided with his son Arthur. His wife Rachel died at Chartley in 1917.
