Read More	The following information was provided by A Webb : Veteran of World War II Never Married Occupation: Retail Grocery Merchant Parents: William Archer Calvert Sr and Mary Botts ~~~The Greenville News (Greenville, SC) Sunday, 28 Dec 1930 Charles Calvert Succumbs After Altercation in Cafe - Funeral Today Abbeville, Dec 27 - Charles Calvert died here this afternoon at the Memorial Hospital from the effects of a gunshot wound at the hands of his brother, William Calvert on Christmas Eve night in a local cafe. The two brothers were together having supper in the cafe when William rose from his chair and shot Charlie, the bullet penetrating his breast about two inches above the heart. The young man was rushed to the Memorial Hospital and lingered until this afternoon. This tragedy has cast a gloom over the entire town and the death of this young man is deplored by a wide circle of friends and relatives. Mr Calvert was successfully engaged in the wholesale and retail oil business representing the Sinclair Company. In this, he was associated with his brothers, John and William Calvert. He had lived his whole life in Abbeville and was a graduate of the high school and of a business college in Columbia. He was the son of the late W A and Mrs Mamie Botts Calvert and was 30 years of age. Mrs Calvert was married to Miss Azile McKnight of Kingstree about four years ago and she with two children, William and Charles, a baby of six weeks, survive. Also survived by: Mrs Jordan Ramey, Mrs Mark Hagan, Abbeville. Mrs Frank Sherard, Calhoun Falls. Mrs Arthur Ellis, New Orleans, who arrived in Abbeville yesterday. John Calvert, of Abbeville. Mrs G A Neuffer, Mrs J C Hill, Mrs W E Leslie, all of Abbeville are Aunts. Prof David H Henry of Clemson College is an Uncle. The young man was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Interment in Long Cane Cemetery. (In a separate article below the one above) Abbeville, Dec 27 - William A Calvert, brother of Charles M Calvert, who died this afternoon from a pistol wound received in the local cafe Christmas Eve night, was late today held for the death of his brother by a coroner's jury investigating the matter. The verdict was: "We the jury find that Charles M Calvert same to his death from a pistol shot wound from the hand of William A Calvert". Calvert, who had been released last night on a $1,100 bond, was re-arrested following the inquest and placed in the county jail. Testimony t the inquest was offered by Dr G A Neuffer, Sheriff McLane, Policemen, Robert WIlson, Tom Finley and Chester Fleming and L L Creswell. Frank Winn and Jimmie Capinondas. The later is the Greek proprietor of the eating place where the shooting occurred. There were no eye witnesses to the shooting but Sheriff McLane repeated statements of the alleged slayer after the arrest to the effect that he was mad and drunk at the time. Such statements had been made in jail in the presence of others, the Sheriff said. ~~~The Gaffney Ledger (Gaffney, SC) Tues, 30 Dec 1930 (Excerpts from the article) Charles Calvert, 30.....his brother, William Calvert, 25" Sheriff McLane testified at the inquest that, after his arrest, William said, "I'm sorry I did it but I was drunk and mad." Several persons who were in the cafe at the time of the shooting, testified at the inquest but little actual light on the motive was given. Testimony was that Charles came into the cafe to purchase Christmas lights and entered into a conversation with his younger brother, who was seated. Witnesses said they talked quietly for a few minutes and then William said, "can't say that to me," and pulled out a pistol and fired once, striking his brother in the heart. Calvert is survived by his widow and 2 children. William is not married.
