Lary, formerly for a short time a resident of Pilot Grove Township, and a brother of Ray and Willard Lary, of Pilot Grove Township and Mrs. Harietta Darling of Elliott was accidentally killed Thursday, October 29, 1914 in Avoca. Details of the accident as given in daily papers are as follows: W. A. Lary, better known as "Doc" Lary, who conducts an automobile livery at the Neumeyer hotel, Council Bluffs, Iowa, was fatally injured about 9 o'clock yesterday, near Avoca, where he died about half an hour later, having been injured internally. Larry was making an automobile tour over the county with the democratic campaigners and had just left Avoca, at which place the crowd had spent the night. A short distance from town, he stopped his automobile for a railroad crossing, leaving the machine in gear. While cranking the machine it started, running over Lary and going wild down an embankment through a fence and into a field, where it was stopped by J. Chris Jensen, who had jumped from another machine. John P. Tinley and John P. Organ, passengers in the machine, were not hurt. Mr. Organ climbed out when it went through the fense and Tinley remained and had reduced the speed of the automobile when Jensen came into the field. No one aside from Mr. Lary was hurt. Following the accident the members of the party decided to call off all the meetings for the day and on reaching the various towns along their route made announcements to that effect. A committee was appointed to stay at Avoca with the body. Mr. Lary was a native of Illinois, 56 years of age, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lary, of this county, and leaves a wife and the brothers and sisters mentioned above. He was formerly a member of the Council Bluffs police department. The funeral was held at the Christian Church in Council Bluffs at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Eld. Edgar Price preaching the funeral sermon and the Odd Fellow and Eagle lodges particiating in the service. The body was taken to Elliott, where services were held Monday by the Odd Fellow Lodge. The following acted as pallbearers: W. Woods, J. Streepy, R. Walker, C.H. Hipwell, A. E. Garey, and Geo. Murray. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery. Red Oak Sun, Friday, November 6, 1914
