William and August worked as farm hands and carpenters in Iowa. William told that there wasn't much for entertainment in those days. Anyone who could play music was very much in demand. William played his accordion for dances until the wee hours of the morning. William went to work for Justus Hampel near Lyman, Iowa. He met and married his oldest daughter, Marie Katherine, known as "Molly" . Marie Katherine had attended Pringey Rural School and spend her girlhood at home helping her parents. They were married in the home of James Drenner near Lyman. They moved to the Mark Funk farm near Lyman where he farm until the spring of 1907. Here are their sons, Carl and Robert, were born. In 1907 William August and Marie Katherine moved to a farm 8 miles east of Flasher, North Dakota where they bought a homestead relinquishment. They came by train to Mandan with their furniture, machinery, and the horses and proceeded from there with lumber wagons, team and buggy. Spring rains had swollen creeks and they were forced to spend their first night on the ground beside their wagons. They had to live with a friend six weeks as their sod shack had been robbed of its doors, windows, and the side pole of the roof. Their well was dug that December, but in the meantime they hauled water from the Gage place 1 1/2 miles away. They hauled their grain to Mandan by team and wagon. The round-trip took two days. William August walked to Fallon to pick up their mail. To keep warm the first couple winters, Marie Katherine gathered cow chips and William dug Coal "undermined" about 2 miles east of the Homestead. The coal was poor but they kept warm. Later, he hauled coal about 25 miles with horse and wagon. In 1907 every other section was homestead land. [A Township being 36 sections - - 18 homestead, to school, 16 government]. A homestead was a quarter of lab, so we should Township had about 72 families. Farms being close together, people visited a lot. William August played his accordion at their house parties. The drought of 1910 saw many wagons with families going back East. The 1930s also took their toll. Everything was open range and crops had to be harvested on time or be by neighbors' cattle and horses. Prairie fires, started mainly by the train, were a constant threat when it was dry. Marie Katherine picked the site of the present buildings for the beautiful view. William August built first a temporary home on the site and later the permanent home. He farmed only 60 acres of land. In order to make a living, he carpentered, cut and threshed grain, and butchered and made sausage for people. William August was Township supervisor and one of the main spokes in the wheel that built the area roads and schools. He was charter member and supervisor of the building of Trinity Lutheran Church in Flasher. They lived on the farm until 1945, when they moved to Bismarck, where they made their home until William's death in 1960. Marie Katherine spent several months in Bismarck and in Washington with Robert before selling her home and moving to apartment in Flasher. Here she lived until she lost her sight. Her remaining years were spent in nursing homes in New Town and Bismarck.
