He was predeceased by his wife Helen Taylor Barnette, his brothers Payne Henderson Barnette and Jacob Edwin Barnette and by his son, William Augustus Barnette, III. After graduating from Clemson University with a degree in textile chemistry, he joined the Air Force and was sent to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Born in Greenwood, October 2, 1921, he was the son of the late William Augustus and Mary Payne Henderson Barnette. He was predeceased by his wife Helen Taylor Barnette, his brothers Payne Henderson Barnette and Jacob Edwin Barnette and by his son, William Augustus Barnette, III. After graduating from Clemson University with a degree in textile chemistry, he joined the Air Force and was sent to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Upon meteorology training, he served as an officer in the Philippines and New Guinea. Returning home to Greenwood, Mr. Barnette joined his father in the business he had founded in 1920, Carolina Pride Foods. He assumed responsibility for production and worked as part of a team with his father and brothers, Henderson and Ed. In 2007, Mr. Barnette and his children purchased all the outstanding shares of Carolina Pride Foods. The company grew to employ more than 1, 000. Mr. Barnette was a "hands on" manager working six days a week until age 91. Throughout the plant he was referred to as "Mr. Bill". At the time of his death he was the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. Mr. Barnette was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood where he served as Deacon, Elder and Trustee. For many years, he served as director of the American Meat Institute, and in 1988, they awarded him the Edward C. Jones Community Service Award. Mr. Barnette served his community in a wide variety of ways. He was an original member and chairman of the Greenwood Planning Board. He served several terms as Trustee at Presbyterian College where he chaired the Physical Development Committee and led in the planning and fund raising for new campus construction. He served as director and president of the Greenwood YMCA, Vice Chairman of the Lander College Foundation, director of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, president of the Greenwood Rotary Club, director of United Savings and Loan, Trustee of the Self Memorial Hospital Foundation, Trustee of Cambridge Academy, Director of Saint Nichols Speech and Hearing Center, and board member at Wesley Commons.
