Gattis was born 1819 in Chapel Hill, Orange County, NC one of 8 known surviving children (5 boys/3 girls) born to Alexander Gattis (c. 1761-1842) and his 2nd) wife, Rosann McCauley Wilson (1779-1856) of Orange County. He was the paternal grandson of John Geddes/Gattis (1735-1810) and Sarah Blackwood. William married on April 11, 1835 to Margaret N. Holloman and the couple farmed in Chapel Hill where they became parents to 3 known children: * Emmeline Gattis CHEEK (1839-1921) * Mary Jane Gattis JONES (1836-1917) * John Thomas Gattis (1843-1917) William Gattis was a founding member of the Orange Methodist organized in Davis School House, near the Wash Fowler home about 1830; in which his brother, Rev. Alexander Gattis (1818-1858), served as the first pastor. When Civil War broke out, William was 49-years old, and enlisted with the Company H, of the NC 47th Infantry, from which he was discharged 5 months later. His only son, Thomas, enlisted in 1864 with Company G, of the NC 11th Infantry Regiment. William was widowed sometime after 1880, and he passed in 1889 at age 70. By this time, all his children were living in Wake County, which may account for why he was buried here in the Cheek Plot instead of Chapel Hill. Daughter, Mary Jane Gattis, married Charles "Wilson" Jones in 1860 and lived in Barton Creek where where was mother to 8 known children. She is reportedly buried in the Lowerey Cemetery there.
