Description	:	William Baker Senior arrived in the Colony with the Second Fleet, as a fifteen-year-old convict on the 'Death/Hell Ship', Neptune, in 1790, transported for seven years. He had been found guilty, aged thirteen, of grand larceny, 7 May 1788, for stealing two silver tablespoons valued at twenty shillings, the property of his employer Thomas Ingram who kept the Castle Inn, a public house at 3 Portugal Street, in Lincoln's Inn Fields, London: William was his pot boy. After gaining his freedom William Baker settled on the Hawkesbury, renting and farming land at Pitt Town Bottoms before moving to Richmond Bottoms where he rented then purchased Fulham Park, Endeavour Farm and Drummond Place, adjoining farms on the banks of the Hawkesbury River. He married Sarah Draper (Britannia), 18 November 1798 at St Phillips Church, Sydney Town, they had a daughter Sarah born at Green Hills (Windsor) in 1801. William Baker rented out his Hawkesbury land and spent a short period as a retailer in Sydney Town having his business and residence at 49 Chapel Row (Castlereagh St) and at The Rocks before moving back to the Hawkesbury. Although his relationship with Sarah Draper failed, she remained his legal wife. William's life partner became Mary Ann Raycroft (William Pitt), they had William born 29 August 1808, Elizabeth born 8 March 1810, John Thomas born 27 May 1813, Mary born 10 September 1815, Daniel (Daniel Raycroft later Racraft) born 21 May 1820 and James (later James Henry) born 25 May 1822. William Baker was described as a small enterprising man, he was an astute businessman who held widespread and varied interests in the Hawkesbury District. He was the well-known owner and licensee of the Royal Oak Inn, an imposing and substantial building on the south side of Baker Street, Windsor. As well as his activities as a publican William Baker was still actively involved in buying and selling property, he owned several properties within Windsor as well as in the surrounding farming community. In 1821 Governor Macquarie recommended him as the auctioneer, vendue master and appraiser for the Town and District of Windsor. He was considered to be a respected and trustworthy local citizen in the Windsor community and was known as a compassionate man interested in helping the poor and underprivileged, perhaps remembering his early life and his good fortune in later years. William donated to the Hawkesbury Flood Fund, the Waterloo Subscription Fund, he was a founding member of the Benevolent Fund for the Relief and Comfort of the poor in Windsor, Richmond, Wilberforce and Pitt Town areas. William Baker was also a foundation and committee member of the Windsor Bible. William gave back to his community with philanthropic activity, supporting St Matthew's Church. Mary's mother Elizabeth came out from England on the Midas in 1821 to join them in the family home, but their happiness was cut short with the death first of Elizabeth late 1826 and a few weeks later Mary herself. She was just thirty-eight years old when buried on 27 January 1827. In 1829 William was to follow her to the grave buried 3 September 1829 at St Matthew's Church burial grounds. Before his death William Baker had established his older children, William and Elizabeth on their own land and arranged his affairs to provide for his younger children who were supported by their older siblings and trustees of the estate, Joseph Smith senior and Richard William Cobcroft. William Baker is buried in an unmarked grave, but from church records it would seem most likely that William Baker is buried somewhere near the back of the church in the area favoured for wealthy emancipist businessmen.
