While serving in the U.S. Army, Bill earned multiple decorations, including the Philippine Liberation Medal with One Bronze Service Star. He was stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan. Upon his return to Montana, Bill worked at Pierce Packing Plant in Billings and the Ryegate Farmers Union Co-op before pursuing a fulfilling career as the Ryegate Postmaster for 24 years, retiring in 1986. Bill was a family man. He loved nothing more than to spend time with children and grandchildren, and they certainly adored him. It is also undeniable that Bill had an eagerness to learn and grow. He enjoyed reading, writing, and studying history. Nature was something that he deeply admired; therefore, hunting, camping, and traveling were among some of his favorite hobbies. Bill’s faith played an important role in his life as well, as he was an active member of the Ryegate Methodist Church for more than 25 years. He found joy in music and brought happiness to those around him by singing and playing the saxophone. Bill never knew a stranger. He had a way of seeing the best in everyone. He mastered the art of storytelling and had the ability to bring both sharp wit and humor into everyday conversations.
