Description	:	William Bell Watkins, 92, of Kittery Point Farm, died peacefully on November 30, 2009 in Berryville, Virginia. Mr. Watkins was born on December 22, 1916 in Philadelphia, son of William Bell Watkins and Gladys Mackay-Smith Watkins. The family first came to Annfield, Clarke County, in 1921. Mr. Watkins attended St. Paul's School in Concord, NH (class of 1937) and the University of Maine where he earned a degree in Agriculture. Read More	William Bell Watkins, 92, of Kittery Point Farm, died peacefully on November 30, 2009 in Berryville, Virginia. Mr. Watkins was born on December 22, 1916 in Philadelphia, son of William Bell Watkins and Gladys Mackay-Smith Watkins. The family first came to Annfield, Clarke County, in 1921. Mr. Watkins attended St. Paul's School in Concord, NH (class of 1937) and the University of Maine where he earned a degree in Agriculture. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant JG in the Navy, assigned to command LCI 437 in the Pacific Fleet. He and his Flotilla received commendations for outstanding heroism in action in support of amphibious landings on Japanese-held Kwagelein and Eniwetok Atolls, Saipan, Guam, Iwo Jima, and Tinian. After the war, he and his first wife Gertrude Dougherty Watkins, bought the Shady Elm Mill near Winchester and ran it for a number of years. He also worked as a surveyor during the building of Dulles Airport. Later he farmed and raised cattle with his father. In his forties, he returned to school where he earned a BS degree in Biology from Shepherd College in 1968. An ardent sportsman, Mr. Watkins developed, as a child, a passion for hunting, fishing, sailing, riding, fox hunting and carriage driving. He loved sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and off the coast of Maine where he was a life-long summer visitor on Mount Desert Island. Later he bred and raised Paint and Thoroughbred horses and a wide array of interesting and unusual animals and fowl. He was a regular member of the Blue Ridge (Fox) Hunt for many years. Later in life he liked nothing better than to show off and go on picnic drives with his snappy pair of Hackney Horses put-to one of his antique carriages with his wife Anne. Bill Watkins was a member of Christ Church, Millwood, the Army and Navy Club and a life member of the American Rifle Association, the Blue Ridge Hunt, The Carriage Association of America, the Virginia Poultry Association, and a founding member of the Piedmont Driving Club. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Anne Presnikoff Watkins; his sister Virginia Watkins Mitchell and her daughter Virginia Page Mitchell; and his four children: Diana Watkins White and her husband Nicholson; Virginia Stuart Watkins and her husband Scott Denman; William Bell Watkins III and his wife Linda; and Frazer Welsh Watkins and his wife Elisabeth; seven grandchildren: Virginia Stuart White Milton, Joseph Nicholson Barney White, Tyler Watkins Davis, Graham Alexander Watkins, William Pepperrell Watkins, Ian Alexander Watkins and Emily Stuart Watkins; and five great-grandchildren: Virginia Stuart Margaret Milton, Thomas Frazer Milton, William Nicholson Milton, John Lloyd Milton, and Mason Carter Davis. The funeral will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Millwood, Virginia on December 22, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be on December 23, at Old Chapel Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to make contributions in his memory to The Carriage Association of America, 3915 Jay Trump Road, Lexington, KY 40511, The Blue Ridge Hunt, P.
