"William Blaine Crittenden, known as "Bill Crittenden" was born in Bozeman, Montana, in 1892, the eldest son of Mary Starmer and William Jeraldon Crittenden. When he was a young man in his early twenties, the family left their home in the green and fertile Gallatin Valley and began a new life on the dry-land plains near Fairfield, Montana, where the young people in the family had the opportunity of filing for homesteads of their own. There he met a beautiful 18-year old woman, Mabel Zimmerman, daughter of John and Sarah Evangeline Zimmerman, and on June 1, 1915, they were married. Three children, Mary Evangeline, Maxine Bernice and Ear James, were born to them. Although throughout most of his life he was a salesman, and an expert in poultry raising, he might have been a song and dance man, as he was fascinated with the vaudeville shows that came to town, and the circus, organizing many a musical performance in the City of Bozeman, and then later tap-dancing and soft-shoeing at home on the spur of the moment whenever the music called for it. His sense of humor was dry, his wit sharp and his remarks and jokes were very seldom topped. You had to go some to beat Grandpa. Five years ago, this man who loved to be active, to dress well, and to dance, suffered the loss of one leg, and was eventually disabled. In 1974, he and Mabel suffered the loss of their beloved son, Jim. However, Jim's daughter, Carolyn, and her two little sons, Jimmy and Steve, visited Grandpa regularly and did much to ease this heartache. Bill enjoyed a close, loving relationship with all 12 of his grandchildren, and their husbands and wives -- those in the Seattle area and the ones in Montana, and looked forward eagerly to their visits. He enjoyed the visits of his granddaughter, Mary, who brought her baby, another great-grandchild, Little Joe Martinez, to see him. During his last conscious hours in the hospital he received with great joy the news from his granddaughter, Marianne, that he was to have yet another great grandchild. In June of this year there was a big celebration in Seattle - the 60th Wedding Anniversary party of Bill and Mabel Crittenden. Friends and family members came from all over to make it a great occasion, bringing much happiness to them both, as all of their grandchildren and their families were here. So today, as many of those grandchildren as were able to come, and his wife Mabel and two daughters, Eva and Maxine, are here to say farewell to Bill Crittenden, a tough old Montanan, a great father, a terrific grandfather, a loving great-grandfather, and, as his daughter, Eva, described him, 'the best-looking man in the family'."
