He was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, Jan. 5, 1818, the son of Thomas and Anne (Reed) Bleakly. He emigrated to America in 1863, landing first in New York City, then he proceeded to Rock Island, Ill., and rented a tract of land, upon which he located and remained for a period of eight years. He then determined to cross the Mississippi, and accordingly came into Linn County, where he purchased the farm which he now occupies, which was prairie land, with twenty-five acres additional of timber. William married Lucinda Little in 1846 in Ireland. Their children were: William, who died on the Atlantic while they were coming from Ireland, Thomas, Francis, Christopher, Margaret, Robert , John, James and David. Mr. Bleakly enjoyed but a limited education in his youth, but he is a man of more than ordinary intelligence and has made the most of his opportunities. He was carefully, trained by his parents, and in early years his mind took a deeply religious turn. He has been connected with the Methodist Episcopal church since 1844, and a Bible-class teacher for forty-five years. He was Class-Leader in Ireland for the long term of eighteen years, and during the eight years spent in Illinois he occupied the same position there. He is now a licensed exhorter in this district, and a Steward of the church here. He has always contributed cheerfully and liberally of his means for the support of the church of his choice, and is one of its chief pillars in this section. Socially, religiously, politically, morally, and financially, Mr. Bleakly is of the leading men of his township, and has assisted materially in its progress and prosperity. Uncle Billy, the father of the family was a little above medium height, of slender build, lithe and sinewy. He dressed neatly and bore himself with an air of self-respect. His words were few, well chosen, and expressed with emphasis. He was broadminded and viewed a subject from every angle, and having formed an opinion, was prepared to defend it with reason and courage. To many he may have appeared somewhat stern, for he had little patience with what he termed "folly", although the merry twinkle in his eyes and the supressed smile that played about his mouth showed that he enjoyed a bit of wit or harmless joke. In a business transaction, he was not only just but generous. In short he was a Christian of the early Methodist type whose standard of morals included both the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule.
