Description	:	William Boyce Loving, 75, of Afton, a retired newsman and ardent conservationist, died Saturday night in a Charlottesville convalescent home. He retired as a reporter for The Charlottesville Daily Progress in June 1967. Before joining the staff of the newspaper, Mr. Loving worked in education and government service. Read More	William Boyce Loving, 75, of Afton, a retired newsman and ardent conservationist, died Saturday night in a Charlottesville convalescent home. He retired as a reporter for The Charlottesville Daily Progress in June 1967. Before joining the staff of the newspaper, Mr. Loving worked in education and government service. At one time he was head of the Spanish and English departments of Blackstone Military Academy and St. Christopher’s School in Richmond. He also served as head of the Department of Dramatic Arts and director of public relations at Mary Washington College and the Richmond Professional Institute. In 1942 he joined the Office on Inter-American Affairs. Later he was press attaché and director of information for the U.S. embassies in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Chile. In 1949 he returned to Albemarle County to restore his home at Afton. He worked in Richmond as deputy regional information officer for the Office of Price Stabilization before joining the staff of the Charlottesville newspaper in December of 1953. Mr. Loving was the author of 14 plays. He gave what was believed to be the first national publicity to the two-year-old Barter Theater at Abington in a New York Times Magazine article. Much of his news reporting concerned conservation. He was one of the recipients of the Governor’s Conservation Award in 1966. One of his conservation efforts publicized the threat to virgin timber at the Goshen Pass in Rockbridge County, which led to the purchase of the property in 1954. It was later given to the state as a park. Born in Iron Gate on Nov. 12, 1898, he was the son of the late William B. and Gertrude Boyce Loving. He is survived by his wife, Marian Staley Whitworth of Marion, and two daughters, Mrs. Anita Lewis of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Mrs. Juliette Whitlach of San Leandro, Calif. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Hebron Baptist Church in Afton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions of the Hebron Baptist Church cemetery fund, Afton, Va., or the Greenwood Community Center, Greenwood, Va. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight in Hill and Irving Funeral Home in Charlottesville. (News-Virginian) ----------------------------------- Veteran of WW I
