Read More	Relatives To Honor William B. Bowdle on 102nd Birthday Friday William Brown Bowdle, Civil war veteran and one of the oldest resident of the middle west, Friday will be 102 years old. He resides with his daughter, Mrs. L. D. Davis at 480 McPheron-av. The flame of the candle of life for the centenarian is now only a feeble flicker, and for this reason no special birthday celebration will be held. Crowds of friends called on Bowdle on his 101st birthday a year ago at an "open house" celebration. Friday none but relatives and intimate friends will enter the home to pay their respects, for the aged man has become very weak and is under the almost constant care of a nurse. He is bedfast most of the time and during the past few months has been unable to read. Bowdle is claimant of the world's record for continuous Sunday school attendance - 96 years. He is extremely proud that he attended Sunday school without interruption from 1834 to 1930. During the past two years his impaired health has prevented his church attendance. The Civil War veteran was born April 15, 1830, in Ross-co, Ohio. In 1831, his parents journeyed overland by wagon and settled in what is now Hardin-co. When Bowdle was a lad, Indians swarmed over northwestern Ohio and Indian boys were among his playmates. He has repeatedly stated that the Indians always were peaceful and extremely loyal in their friendship. Bowdle has lived in Lima and immediate vicinity for almost 100 years. Most of his life has been devoted to farming. He has witnessed the transformation of a virgin wilderness into a highly developed agricultural and industrial empire. He has watched the development of the steam engine, the telegraph, the telephone, the trolley car, the gasoline engine, the motion pictures, the automobile, the airplane, the submarine, the radio, and television. The aged man declares the Volstead Act and the Eighteenth Amendment never will be repealed and he asserts the next great war will be a world holocaust - a siege of ruthless and wanton killing of men, women and children. He attributes his longevity to temperate habits. Bowdle is a staunch foe of liquor and tobacco. Bowdle served from August, 1862 until July, 1865, as a private in Company B, 118th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and is one of the very few surviving Civil war veterans of that unit. He claims to be a grandson of White Brown, a captain under General George Washington in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He said his grandfather removed in 1801 from Sussex-co, Delaware, to Ohio. Besides his daughter, Mrs. Davis, the aged man has two sons, Edward Bowdle and J. A. Bowdle, also Lima residents.
