William Donaldson, a young man who had lived with his uncle, Jerry Plotner, 4-1/2 miles south of Philo, during the past 3 years, committed suicide Sunday night, by putting a bullet through his heart. Donaldson was 28 years old, was well-liked in the neighborhood, and was a good farmer. The story sent to THE GAZETTE from Philo, is that he was in love with his cousin, Miss Plotner, 17 years old, a daughter of Jerry Plotner. It appears that she did not reciprocate his affections, however, and kept company with William VanMeter, a well-known young man of the neighborhood. Sunday evening VanMeter called on her and when he was about to depart he was attacked by Donaldson, who had been lying in wait for him in the dark. It is said that Donaldson threw a brick at Miss Plotner's lover's head. Mr. Plotner heard the trouble and took Donaldson into the house so that VanMeter could go his way, without being molested. A few minutes later Donaldson said that he would go to the wood yard and get in the wood for the morning. Soon after he had left the members of the family heard a shot, and on an investigation found Donaldson lying in a dying condition in the yard. He died in two minutes, the ball having penetrated the heart. The remains have been shipped to Lancaster, Ohio, Donaldson's former home, for burial. The episode has caused no small amount of excitement in the neighborhood. It is said that Donaldson was deeply in love with his young cousin; the members of the family knew it, but they could do nothing to divert his mind. People are now surprised that he did not take VanMeter's life before he ended his own. Coroner Sim held an inquest Monday and found that Donaldson came to his death by a gunshot fire from his own hand.
