Hickman was born in Union county, Indiana, May 15, 1831, and died March 5th, 1915, at his home in West Boone. He was married June 15, 1851 in Hamilton County, Indiana to Miss Mary Jane Benbo, who preceded him in death March 23, 1894. To this union was born five children, two of whom are still living, a son, Benjamin Hickman, of West Boone, and a daughter, Mrs. Ella Burgess of Centerville. He with his family moved from Hamilton county, Indiana, to Fayette county, Iowa, in the fall of 1854 and from there to Boone county March, 1855, being one of Iowa's pioneer settlers. On June 3, 1900 he was united in marriage to Araminta C. Hoover of Henry county, Indiana. Mrs. Hickman still survives him. Mr. Hickman enlisted in the civil war service in Company D, 32nd Iowa, from Boonsboro in 1862, serving faithfully until the close of the war Mr. Hickman was well and favorably known throughout the county and was a man that always had a smile and pleasant word for all and in his death the county loses one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens. He was only sick about two weeks, but was taken severely sick from the first with bronchial pneumonia. During his sickness he was very patient and kind. The day of his death he shook hands with those who came in to see him and made inquiries concerning their health and that of their family. Owing to the poor health of Mrs. Hickman the funeral services were held at the home at 318 Main Street, conducted by the Rev. J. Chas. Crawford, who for many years was a friend of the deceased. Music was furnished by students from the Bible school. After the address by Rev. Crawford the services were given in charge of the Grand Army post of which he was a member. The pall bearers were also members of the post. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife; a son and daughter; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; three stepsons; one stepdaughter; besides other relatives and a host of friends and his comrades of dear old Company D. The sympathy of the friends is extended to the relatives in this their great sorrow.
