Description	:	Wm. C Newton, 76, a resident of Hawarden 60 years, died last Thursday in the Hawarden hospital after a long illness. For many years Mr. Newton operated a dray line in Hawarden and prior to that he was in charge of a feed store. A son of Allan and Margaret Newton, he was born June 20, 1876, at Independence, Iowa. In... Read More	Wm. C Newton, 76, a resident of Hawarden 60 years, died last Thursday in the Hawarden hospital after a long illness. For many years Mr. Newton operated a dray line in Hawarden and prior to that he was in charge of a feed store. A son of Allan and Margaret Newton, he was born June 20, 1876, at Independence, Iowa. He came to Hawarden with his parents at the age of 15. A few years later he and his father drove a covered wagon to Oklahoma to take a claim in the Cherokee territory. Later he returned to Hawarden. In 1909 he married Miss Ellen Johnson and to this union one daughter Nona was born. His wife preceded him in death in 1925. He was married to Mrs. Lola McNaughton October 28, 1929. He was a member of the Methodist church. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows lodge No. 196 and June Rebekah lodge. Survivors are the widow, Lola; a daughter, Mrs. Nona Strong of Hawarden; a step-daughter, Mrs. Mattie Baugus of Hawarden; a step-son Floyd Nelson of Port Orchard, Wash.; three sisters, Mrs. John Van Wout and Mrs. Norma Boulis of Waukegan, Ill., and Mrs. R. T. Smith of Parsons, Kan., and two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Frasier Funeral home and at 2:30 in the Methodist church, Rev. B. Roy Brown officiating. Mrs. Ralph Gregg, Jr., with Mrs. P. W. Peters as accompanist, sang two numbers. Pall bearers were Harry Wassom, Clarence Larson, Jesse Yates, Dick Vogelsang, Roy Searle and Sam Highsmith, members of the local Odd Fellows lodge. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery. Members of the Odd Fellows lodge attended the funeral in a body and were in charge of the ritualistic work at the grave. Harwarden Independent 10/16/1952
