By 1820, William Canary is found in Ohio. William's wife, Elizabeth, is known to have been born in Ohio or Virginia sometime between 1800 and 1804. The 1883 History of Brown County, Ohio has a short biography about the Canary family. William Canary was the son of Charles Canary, who was born c. 1744 in Lenningen, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and who came to America sometime before 17776 and the Revolutionary War. He was a Loyalist and served under General George Washington during the Revoluntion. Charles Canary was married to Margaret/Margnathea Sawyers/Swyers on March 31, 1777 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Margaret/Margnathea is believed to have been born in Germany sometime between 1750 and 1755. Charles and Margaret are believed to have had at least two sons and one daughter. Charles and Margaret moved the family to Washington County, Kentucky c. 1790. They remained there in Washington County, Kentucky until March 16, 1804, when they moved to Lewis Township, Brown County, Ohio. Charles was one of the first Justices in Brown County, Ohio. Charles Canary is believed to have died in Lewis Township sometime between 1819 and 1830. Their children include; 1. James L. Canary, born 2. Ellen Canary, born before 1790, probably in Pennsylvania. Ellen was married in 1806 to William L. Love in Brown County, Ohio. William was the son of Abraham Love, who was born in Ireland c. 1776. Abraham brought the family to America in 1794, settling almost immediately in Cincinnati, Ohio. They came to Lewis Township of Brown County, Ohio c. 1805 and William and Ellen were married shortly afterward. 3. William Kanary/Canary, born May 27, 1797 in Washington County, Kentucky. (Son) born between 1820 and 1824 2. (Dau.) born between 1820 and 1824. This is Margaret Kanary/Canary, who was born on April 5, 1821 in Ohio. Margaret was married to Martin Miller on April 22, 1847 and two children were born to them before Martin died before 1850. They include; A. (Son) ____________ Miller, born before 1850 in Ohio. He died sometime before 1883. B. (Dau.) ____________ Miller, born Martin Miller died sometime before 1850 and at the time of the 1850 census, Margaret Miller, age 30, is found living with her parents in Lewis Township, Brown County, Ohip. Margaret K. (Canary) Miller was then married 2nd to John Heizer Jr. on December 30, 1852 in Brown County, Ohio. John Heizer Jr. was born on December 5, 1805 in Augusta County, Virginia, the son of John Heizer Sr., who was born in Augusta County, Virginia and who died c. 1840 in Brown County, Ohio, and Elizabeth (Mowrey) Heizer, who died in Brown County, Ohio c. 1848. The Heizers came to Brown County, Ohio from Virginia in 1807 and according to the HISTORY OF BROWN COUNTY, OHIO, that was published in 1883, John Heizer Jr. waited to marry "until he had accumulated sufficient means." John Jr. bought a 212 acre farm in Brown County, Ohio in 1849 "and four years later was married to Margaret, the widow of Martin Miller; her maiden name was Canary, and she was a descendant of a noble pioneer family. Her birth date to 1820. She is the mother of eight children, two by her first husband, of whom the son is deceased, and six by her present husband (John Heizer Jr.), of who five are now living." (Canary) Miller Heizer died on 26 Oct 1891 in Brown County, Ohio and her mortal remains were laid in the Shinkle Ridge Cemetery in Higginsport, Brown County, Ohio. This daughter may have died in the 1830's in Brown County, Ohio as she is not with the family in the 1840 census, though there is a Ellen Kanary, age 20 found with the family at the time of the 1850 census. At the time of the 1880 census of Lewis Township, Brown County, Ohio, the following is found; Ellen Canary Head 30 Keeping House Ohio Charles McClane Nephew 24 Farming Ohio This is almost certainly our Ellen Canary, but she is actually 50, not 30. An Ellen Canary, who was born in 1829 and who died in 1907 is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Milford, Clermont County, Ohio. This is the same cemetery where Ellen's youngest sister, Georgia Ann (Canary) Shinkle, and her family are buried. This is almost certainly our Ellen Canary. She must never have married. Sarah A Canery was married to Harmon John Ralston on February 23, 1865 in Brown County, Ohio. Sarah A. (Canery) Ralston died on ____________ __, 1917 in McLean County, Illinois and her mortal remains were laid in the Wiley Cemetery in Colfax, McLean County, Illinois.
