They were Jack O'Neill and Jack Wright of Gregory, SD; Lawrence O'Malley of Chambers, NE, and J.J. Kennedy, E.J. Healey and Wid Turner of this city. Mr. Carroll died on Friday morning at the Mother of Grace hospital at Gregory, SD, following a three weeks illness. His death was attributed to chronic bronchitis, which later developed into heart trouble. Born at Scranton, PA on July 29, 1874, his age at death was 64 years, 5 months, and 7 days. He spent the days of his youth and grew to young manhood in the community, coming here at the age of three with his parents, who located on a farm west of Creighton. When a young man, the lure of baseball called him, and he played on a NE, SD, and for a time was with the Prescott, AZ team. He was recognized as one of the best catchers in this part of the state and was a valuable man on the Creighton Teams of 1901 and 1902. At the close of his baseball career, Mr. Carroll was employed as a salesman for the Gunn Brewing Co., of WI, and traveled on the road for four years. He then became engaged in business at Dallas and Gregory, SD, for a number of years. His last enterprise was a hardware store at Dallas. The past eight years, and up to the time of his illness and death, he was an employee of the government, but, lately only worked part time, owing to declining health. He was united in marriage to Miss Ida Mattern of Creighton at Gregory, SD on 26 Oct. 1911, and the couple located in Dallas, which has since been their home. To this union were born six children, one son, passing away in infancy. Surviving him are the widow and five children, Mary, Helen, Alice Claire, Betty Jean, Jerry and Pat. Other relatives who mourn his departure are four brothers, Frank and Peter of Creighton, John of Atkinson, Charles of Long Beach, CA, and five sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Mrs. Elmer Collen of Creighton, Sister Leander of Chicago, and Mrs. LaRue Broghamer of Hot Springs, SD.
