Brought About Caucus Reforms,Active in Typographical Union, Serving as President in 1892 William Carroll, who for 30 years was the foreman of the composing room of the Providence Journal and a veteran of more than half a century's service on newspapers throughout the country, died yesterday at Hope Hospital, where he was taken just a week ago. He was in his 79th year and for the last three years had been failing in health. Mr. Carroll was in the employ of the Providence Journal for 35 years, during which time he served as foreman of the composing room from 1890 until his retirement in November 1919. He was born in Jewett City, Conn., April 27, 1853, and attended the district schools. At the age of 15 he apprenticed himself in the printing business in the office of the Press in New London Conn., but a few months later went to work on the Republican in Meriden Conn. He joined the Typographical in 1870, thereafter working on the Willimantic Journal, and in New York City on the first issue of John Russell Young's Standard, the New York Herald and Times and in the office of George Lafaye. In the summer of 1871 he made a trip West, working en route in the cities of Pittsburgh, Columbus, Lafayette, Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit and Grand Rapids. He came to Providence in September of 1872, spending the rest of his active years here! He was employed first on the Morning Herald and successively with the Evening Press, Morning Star and Sunday Dispatch. He was foreman of the Morning Star, and in its city editor during 1886. On Jan 1, 1887, he took a position with the Providence Journal, and in February of 1890 was promoted to foreman of the Sunday Journal. Shortly afterwards he was made foreman of the entire composing room of the Journal, a position he held until his retirement. Mr. Carroll took an active interest in the work of Providence Typographical Union No. 33, which he served as president in 1892 and a recording secretary in 1878. He was local delegate to the convention of the International Union in 1886 where he introduced and obtained passage of the Strike Fund Law. He served in 1902 as chairman of a committee in charge of a 50th anniversary observance of the Providence Union founding, directed the exercises and handled the publication of a souvenir volume. "Printers and Printing in Providence". He was married 55 years ago to Mary E. Sheehan, since deceased. Five children survive him, Dr. Charles Carroll, a member of the Rhode Island College of Education; Miss Mary Carroll, supervisor of industrial work on the Board of Education; John P. Carroll, advertising manager at Fays Theatre; Miss Alice S. Carroll, teacher at the Commercial High School and Frank C. Carroll, compositor with the Providence Journal Company. A daughter, Miss Fannie C Carroll, deceased. Mr. Carroll was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Radical Club, the Quarter Century Club, the Town Criers of Rhode Island and some years ago was an active member of the American Order of Foresters, which he served at one time as Chief Ranger at the head of the order in this State. Funeral Services will be conducted at the home, 92 Dana Street, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock,, followed by a solemn requiem mass at the Church of the Holy Name, camp Street at 9:45. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery Pawtucket.
