William Childs, following so soon after that of his estimable wife, has cast a shadow of sadness over the community, and takes from us one of our most prominent citizens. Judge Child was born in Fairlee, June 15th, 1806. For nearly three-quarters of a century he has been identified with the interests of his native town, holding every office within the gift of its inhabitants. For three years he represented the town in the Legislature, was town treasurer for seventeen successive years and was town clerk for a much longer period. He was also associate judge of the court of Orange county for two years and nearly forty consecutive years he held a commission from the Governor as Justice of the Peace. In politics, Judge Child was a whig, but after the death of that party he became a republican and was a staunch supporter of the administration during the late civil war. In temperance, he was a strong advocate, giving time and influence in support of the cause. He has been an influential citizen in town, county and state from early manhood. He was a man esteemed for his qualities of heart and mind, and justly entrusted with official responsibilities, he has rendered much public service. He leaves one daughter and two sons. Two sisters also survive him.
