DAVIS, FURNITURE COMPANY FOUNDER, DIES ON 78th BIRTHDAY William Cristy Davis died Monday on his 78th birthday. He was born in Quissett, Sept. 12, 1854. Mr. Davis was the founder of the W. C. Davis furniture company. Most of his life was devoted to the furniture and undertaking business in Falmouth. He had been confined to bed at his home on Palmer avenue since he suffered a shock about nine weeks ago. He suffered another attack Saturday. Mr. Davis was the son of Samuel Palmer Davis of Quissett. His mother was Mary Delano Hitch of Fairhaven. He came naturally by his career, for his father was a cabinet maker and undertaker in an era when the ability of the cabinet maker to make his own coffins was a distinct asset in an isolated community. The son founded the business which perpetuates his name in 1885. It was housed in what is now the Falmouth House block. An old picture which hangs in the W. C. Davis company office shows the first establishment with a sign, "W. C. Davis, "Furniture Rooms." Sofas, chairs, and other articles of furniture are displayed on the piazza which then as now surrounded the block. A spring wagon with a load of furniture is ready to drive off and William C. Davis stands on the porch giving an order to a drummer with a derby hat and poised pencil. The business grew and moved across the street to its present home which has been steadily expanded. In 1913 it was incorporated and in 1915 W.C. Davis whose health had not been of the best turned over the management to his nephew, Warren F. Davis. W. C. Davis continued as president of the corporation until his death. He spent a number of winters in Dunedin, Fla., but had recently lived the year round here. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife who was Louise Stetson Palmer; two sons, LeRoy S. Davis who is connected with the furniture company and William Carl Davis who is associated with R. H. Macy & Co. in New York; and two sisters, Dr. Bessie Callaghan, a practicing physician in Cambridge and Miss Harriet C. Davis who lives with her. His first/wife, Marcia Rogers, died many years ago. Mr. Davis was the senior deacon of First Congregational church, Falmouth, and for many years Sunday school superintendent. He had served on the Falmouth school committee. The funeral was held yesterday at 2 P.M. from his home. Officiating clergyman was the Rev. Leonard S. Nightwine. The pall bearers were, William E. Lawrence. John M. Howe, George W. Jones, and Henry H. Gifford. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
