N. Beverage, on Monday evening just as the sun was setting behind his native hills. Claude had been ill since last year, a victim of diabetes, and in the fall, of 1919 sought relief at the University hospital, that being in the early stages of the disease. He was temporarily benefited, but upon his return to his home a decline set in and he grew gradually worse until death claimed him at the time stated. For several weeks he was confined to his room and bedfast part of that time, and no hope of his recovery was entertained. His death coming in the vigor of young manhood is peculiarly sad, and deep sympathy is felt for the surviving members of the family, father, mother and a younger brother. He was born and reared in Monterey, had reached the age of 22 and had many friends in the town and community. During his illness he made a profession of faith and was enabled to face the Grim Reaper with a resignation & fearlessness that left no doubt as to his acceptance. In fact those who ministered to him during his last days, assert that they never saw one approach the end more confidently or die a more triumphant death. Though called into the Master's vineyard late in his young life, it is believed that he did not go empty handed, but bore a convincing testimony and by his exhortations and earnest appeals to family, friends and associates has sown seed that shall live after him and result in a harvest in after years. The funeral took place from the Methodist church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. D. McNeer. There was a large attendance of friends and relatives both from town and nearby communities. Several days before his death, he had selected hymns that he wished to be used at his funeral, and this request, as well as other details of the service, was complied with by those in charge of the service.
