The many friends of Mr. W. C. Leak will learn with profound sorrow of his death which occurred Wednesday afternoon at three o’clock at the Charlotte Sanatorium, whither he had been carried January 10th for treatment. With him when the end came were his wife and two sons, William C. Leak, Jr., a student at the University, and Thomas Randolph Leak; and two brothers, Thomas C. Leak and Frank Leak. Mr. Leak was severely injured on Friday, April 13, 1917, by an automobile which knocked him down in front of the courthouse; his left shoulder and both legs were broken, and other injuries sustained. He never recovered sufficiently to resume his normal activities but patiently bore his sufferings with a Christian’s fortitude. Since the accident that turned an active business man into more or less inactivity, he suffered several episodes of paralysis. More recently he was afflicted with Bright’s Disease which finally claimed . . . . .(illegible) which finally resulted in his death. The remains were brought from Charlotte on the midnight train Wednesday night and transferred to his residence to await the funeral, which was held this afternoon at three o’clock at the Methodist church, conducted by Revs. G.F. Smith, J.H. Hall and E.H. Davis. The floral designs were beautiful and literally covered the altar, such was the profusion of these offerings from loving friends. The interment was at New Eastside cemetery. The active pall bearers were: W.N. Everett, Cam Morrison, Geo. P. Entwistle, W.P. McRae, H. C. Wall, W.B Cole, Geo. S. Steel and Dr. R.T.S. Steel. The honorary pall bearers were: W.T. Covington, H.S. Ledbetter, Hal Gibbons, Wm. Entwistle, R. S. Ledbetter, Dr. A.C. Everett, Dr. J. M. Ledbetter, J LeGrand Everett, Jno. L. Everett, Dr. W.P. Webb, Eugene Payne, K. F. McBryde, J. C. Stubbs, R. L. Steele, S. S. Steele, Jno S. Ledbetter, A. G. Corpening, J. P. Little, L. J. Bell, F. H. Weston, J. A. Leak, W. P. Parsons, Jas. A. Hardison, and W. L. Scales. As a mark of respect and love, the city school adjourned for the day at noon and attended the funeral in a body; the school will shortly hold a memorial service for Mr. Leak, who as chairman of the board of Trustees of the city schools for the last 18 years had done so much for the schools. He was in his fifty-fifth year, having been born June 18, 1863. He was the second son of the late Thomas C. and Pattie Wall Leak. He was educated at Bingham School, and at the age of 26 was elected to the presidency of Pee Dee Mfg. Co., being at the time the youngest cotton mill president in the south. He was also vice president of the Bank of Pee Dee, a former chairman of the Board of County Commissioners and for 18 years chairman of the Trustees of the Rockingham city schools. He was a communicant of the Methodist church, of which for many years he was a steward. He is survived by Mrs. Leak, who was Miss Nancy Pegues, and two sons, William C., Jr., and Thomas R., and the following brothers: Pickett, John, Mial, Thomas C., Frank and Robert Leak. “Dock” Leak, as he was lovingly called, will be sadly missed throughout the county. He was a friend of the people, and rejoiced in helping scores of persons who can bear witness to his benevolence. He filled his business duties with marked success, and his name was a synonym for honesty and square dealing. He was loyal and true, clean, upright, modest, and a gentleman through and through; he has left an imprint for good on Richmond county that will live into the distant years. And now, after life’s fitful fever, he sleeps well.
