The first information was sent to Mr. Brogdon in Little Rock, where he is chief deputy in the office of Collector Jack Walker, and he wired the sad news home, Mrs. Brogdon being unaware that her son was ill until news of his death was received, it being thought best to keep the fact of his serious illness from her. Mr. Brogdon arrived home Wednesday morning. The authorities at Portsmouth advised that Clifford would be given a military funeral and the body interred in the Naval Cemetery there or forwarded here for burial as desired. They were advised to ship the body to Springdale, and a message was received yesterday morning saying it left Portsmouth Wednesday evening. The body should reach Springdale Friday evening or Saturday morning, coming by way of St. Louis. The funeral will probably be held at Central Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Dr. R. T. Phillips, and internment will be in Bluff Cemetery. Nothing further in known at this time concerning the funeral arrangements. William Clifford Brogdon was born in Springdale December 13, 1899. He enlisted in the Navy May 6, 1917, and had been promoted to the rank of first-class seaman. For more than a year past he had been assigned to the Battleship South Carolina, and had made a number of trips across. Clifford was in love with the Navy and gave evidence of a promising career. The announcement of his death was a great shock to his many Springdale friends, as no one here knew of his illness. Deceased was a member of Central Presbyterian Church and is survived by his parents and two sisters, Grace and Lolita, who have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. The Springdale News Springdale, AR 24 Jan 1919 The body of Clifford Brogdon, whose death from pneumonia at Fortress Monroe, Va., was report in last issue of the paper did not arrive until Saturday evening, coming from the south. The body was expected to come by way of St. Louis, and reach here not later than Saturday morning the funeral having been announced for 2:30 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church. The delay in the arrival of the body necessitated postponement until 2:30 Sunday afternoon. The funeral was one of the most largely attended ever in Springdale, services being conducted by Dr. R. T. Phillips, pastor Central Presbyterian Church. Following were the pall bearers, all having been in the U. S. Navy; D. A. Burson, O. D. Parsely, Thos. E. Alford, V. A. Hill of Fayetteville, Howard King and E. D. Williams of Springdale. In addition there was a squad of former soldiers in charge of Webb Powell, which acted as an escort. When the casket, which was draped with the American flag was carried into the church, the soldiers stood at attention with bowed heads. Arriving at the cemetery the casket was carried between the column of soldiers, and after being lowered into the grave taps were blown by Alva Griffith, a boy scout.
