His story may be best told by going back to the date of his birth in far-off Australia December 01, 1868. In 1869, his father Levi, long a well known pioneer of Hettinger county, moved from Willegy, Australia. William's birthplace, to America, settling in Missouri, the elder Colgrove had been a sailor on whaling vessels as a young man. He was not a British subject, having been born in Brattleboro, Vermont. He signed as a deck hand a on a whaling vessel when he was 18 years old and spent three years on whalers. He lived on Navigation Isle in the South Seas most of the next three years spending some time also at sea. He was married in Australia and there his five children, James, Charles, Levi, William and Victoria were born. Seeking the adventures and free life of a frontier country, the father came to Dakota Territory with his son James in 1882. he was employed for some time in the vicinity of Bismarck and Mandan and after the building of the railroad through that section went on to Dickinson country. Like others on the frontier at that time, the elder Colgrove spent much time trapping and hunting and the gun with which he brought down many a buffalo on the prairies later came into possesion of William. William and his brother, Charles, now living in Dickinson, came to the state in 1884. The father filed on a pre-emption claim two miles south of Dickinson in 1884 but the next year moved the family to Lime Kiln Butte in Hettinger county, 22 miles south of Richardton. The Colgroves built a lime kiln and sold large amounts of lime in the years following, furnsihing the lime used in the construction of the Stark county court house. William remained with his father about two years attending grade school at Dickinson in 1884 and in 1885. In the summer months of those two years he picked buffalo bones. The bones brought $10, $12, and up to $15 a ton. Buyers freighted them to the Black Hills. The Colgroves were engaged in the ranching business for several years and a great many head of beef cattle were fattened and shipped to market from the Colgrove range. The father spent a few years in Idaho and on his return to the state made final proof on a homestead near the old farm in Hettinger county. After farming and ranching in the area, William bought out his father in the late 1900's. He leased additional land and ranched until he was elected county commissioner in 1913, serving until 1916. Soon after being elected he moved to Mott and resieed there until four months ago, when he moved to Regent. Except for one winter spent in New England he remained in Regent until his recent removal to New England. Mr. Colgrove was married in 1900 to Anna Schutz, a native of Hungary, whose parents lived in Richardton. The children of the couple are: Albert, Lemmon, South Dakota, Edward, New England, Earl and Ralph, Mott, George, Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Mrs. Al Manzitto, Sacramento, California. Aged Pioneer Laid to Rest Friends and relatives gathered at the Mott Congregational Church on Sunday, April 26, at 2:30 p.m. to pay their last respects to one of Hettinger county's first residents, William Colgrove. Reverend H. Fichtler was officiating, minister with Mrs. Con Roster at the organ and the Misses Janice Gray and Medora Mehrer, and Arnold Haring and R. J. Bloedau singing. Active pallbearers were Jake Jacobsen, C. E. Schwartz, C. M. Skogley, Steve Lindemann, Peter Jordan and Clarence Vasey. Honorary Pallbearers were George Galloway, T. C. Blaine, A. J. Raab, W. I. Bushart, Joe Thomas, Joe Zauner, Adam Kelsch, B. C. Philips, Sam Birdsall, Oscar Buehler, Frank Wagendorf, and Dr. O. C. Maercklein. Interment was in the Sunny Slope Cemetery with the Olson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Colgrove passed away at a nursing home in Jamestown at 11:45 last Wednesday evening, April 22, from complications due to old age after an illness of about 11 months. He was born at Sydney, Australia, on December 01, 1868, to Levi and Ann Kilgore Colgrove. The family came to the United States in 1869, living for a time in Missouri they came to what was known as the Dakota Territory in 1882, settling in Dickinson. In 1885 they moved to the northwestern part of Hettinger county, about 18 miles from Mott on a ranch near the Colgrove Buttes. Mr. Colgrove attended school in Dickinson, the first school there. On February 26, 1900, he was married to Anna Schutz at Richardton. They family continued to live on the ranch until about 1922, when they moved into Mott, where they have resided most of the time since except for a few years at Regent and New England. He served as a member of the county commissioners from 1912 to 1916 and was a member of the First Congreegational church. He had a most interesting life. From the time he settled in the county, he took an active part in all the community about him. In the early days, in business with his father and brothers, they built a lime kiln, furnishing much of the lime used in building the courthouse. He hunted buffalo in those early days and from the ranch was shipped many carloads of beef cattle to eastern markets. The esteem shown this venerable gentleman was evident when friends gathered on February 26, 1950, to honor him and his good wife on their 50th wedding anniversary. Surviving are his widow; sons, Albert of Lemmon, Edgar of New England, Earl of Richmond, California, Ralph og Mott, and George of Bowman, and one daughter, Mabel, Mrs. Al Manzitto of West Sacramento, California. Three sons died in infancy. He was a familiar sight on the streets of Mott until the summer months last year when he fell and broke his hip. Last fall complications set in that made it necessary to put him in the nursing home. Second child was Johnnie born June 27, 1903, died September 01, 1903, and interred September 1903, all at Dickinson, Stark County, North Dakota.
