Description	:	MR. W. C. STERLING - January 22, 1925 W. C. Sterling, well known farmer, who has resided in this vicinity for many years, died at his home six miles northeast of Wauneta Jan. 6th at 6 p.m. His death followed a year of suffering which all efforts to relieve proved of no avail. Mr. Sterling came with his parents to this county (which was then called Howard county) in August, 1871, and preempted the land on which here sided at the time of his death. Mr. Sterling came with his parents to this county (which was then called Howard county) in August, 1871, and preempted the land on which here sided at the time of his death. July 5, 1873 he went back to Illinois and went to work for his brother-in-law, Loran Case. In the fall of 1874 he drove back to Kansas after his mother, brother and sister, his father having died in 1872. They remained in Illinois until August, 1875 when they came back to their claims. He was born in Athens county Ohio Dec. 21, 1848, his age being 76 years and 16 days at the time of death. March 1st, 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Sara Emma Newton and to this union eight children were born, one son and seven daughters. One daughter, Mrs. Minnie Smith passed over Aug. 13, 1910. His wife and seven children are left to mourn his loss. They are Mrs. Rosa Obenchain of Cedar Vale; Mrs. Lotta Thompson of Salina; Mrs. Hattie Ruby of Nowata,Okla.; Mrs. Erma Purcell of Granada, Colo.; Elmer Sterling of Wauneta; Mrs. Cora Morgan of Granada Colo, and one sister; Mrs. Anna Henson. The children were all at his bedside but Mr. and Mrs. Purcell and Mrs. Morgan did not get here until he had passed away. The funeral was conducted by Frank Hedges of Winfield who took for his text, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." Interment was made in the Round Mound cemetery. Vocal music was furnished by Mrs.. PearlBurden, Mrs. Rinda Lyons, Miss Mabel Wiley, Ollie Slates and Harl Casebolt. The pall bearers were four of his grandsons, Will, Carl, and Evert Smith and Floyd Obenchain and two nephews, George and Frank Sterling of Caney. Mr. Sterling was of a quiet, unassuming disposition, always holding to the highest standard of life. He had been a member of the church of Christ 35 years and died in the triumphs of faith. He was a faithful husband, kind and loving father, always desirous that his children walking the straight and narrow way.
