Description	:	William "Bill" David Long, 86, of Ames, died on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Green Hills Retirement Center in Ames. Bill was born on June 4, 1927 in Montour, Iowa; the son of Howard and Lola Corbin Long. Following the death of his father at an early age, Bill's step-father, Frank Mattingly, helped Lola raise him. Bill was born on June 4, 1927 in Montour, Iowa; the son of Howard and Lola Corbin Long. Following the death of his father at an early age, Bill's step-father, Frank Mattingly, helped Lola raise him. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1946 and served in the US Army. Bill married Maxine Malliet on September 4, 1950 in Ames. He worked at Iowa State University from 1949 until his retirement in 1989 where he served as ISU's Dairy Plant Manager and Supervisor of Athletic Fields. Bill enjoyed fishing, golfing, helping his children with many projects, having fun with his grandchildren and the staff at Green Hills, and anything relating to the Cyclones and the Chicago Cubs. He was a charter member of the Ballard Golf and Country Club, served on the Ballard school board, and was a member of the Cyclone Club and St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maxine, of Ames; his children, Tom (Nancy) Long of Gilbert, Mike (Becky) Long of Ankeny, Patti (Mike) McDonald of Cypress, CA and Gary (Deb) Long of Ames; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Norman (Lois) Long of Yucaipa, CA; a sister-in-law, Joan Mattingly of Boone, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bob Mattingly and Jerry Long, who died in infancy.
