"The hunting accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday near the Bill Winter's place in the Butte Creek district about seven miles from Chico where the youth was hunting with his father, his brother Donald, 13, Fred Woods, John Chambers and the latter's two sons, Donald 14, and Jack, 16. "The party which began hunting at 6:30 yesterday morning had bagged one deer which they brought into the police station for registration of the deer tag, and had returned for more meat. At about 2:30, according to the victim's father, the group decided to quit and return to the car. Cantwell unloaded his gun and instructed the boys to do likewise before starting back to the car. "Donald and Bill Cantwell and Donald Chambers arrived at the car ahead of the rest of the party. Donald Cantwell, according to his father, in making certain his gun was unloaded before putting it in the car, pulled back the lever action on his .22 and evidently the trigger did not catch but followed the lever action back and fired a shell that was in the gun. The bullet entered the right side of Bill's body at the upper end of the right kidney. "Donald Chambers called out that Billy had been shot. Chambers who was about 50 yards from the car at the time rushed to the boys, he told the deputy coroner. The injured youth was placed in the car and Chambers immediately brought him to the hospital where he died early this morning. "In addition to his father and his brother, Donald, his mother, Emma Cantwell, also survives. "Funeral services will be held from the Brusie, Black and Johnson Funeral home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will follow in Chico cemetery." ~~~ The Chico Enterprise, Wednesday Evening, September 22, 1943: "Rites Held for Cantwell Boy. Many friends and classmates gathered at the flower banked chapel of Brusie, Black and Johnson for the funeral services this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for Billie Cantwell who died Monday morning. The Rev. C. Pickelman officiated. "Mrs. Henry Purcell and Miss Charlotte Purcell sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," accompanied at the organ by Lillian Cook. "Billy's classmates acting as pallbearers were Charles Duncan, Jerome Lindsay, Bernard Hardesty, Donald Swan, Richie Escotto and Donald Cummings. Interment was held in the Chico cemetery." ~~~ 12-year-old William David Cantwell was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on September 22, 1943.
