Description	:	William was the eldest known child of Andrew Layton and Margaret Phillips. William D. Layton and his brother George W. Layton both served in Co G, 31st Wisconsin Infantry. William enlisted on Jan 13, 1864; his brother George a week later on Jan 19, 1864. Both were Privates, and both were mustered out on July 8, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. They obviously served together. This regiment was engaged in battles at Chesterfield, SC; Averasboro, NC; Bentonville, NC; Siege of Savannah, GA; Harrison’s Plantation, GA; and the Siege of Atlanta, GA. William was married... William was married four times. His first wife was Scyndisa Bailey (see link). They were married on 29 Nov 1857 in Green Co, Wisconsin and were the parents of four known children: Melissa Mary, Martha Jane, Alonzo H., and Harriet Elnora. William married secondly on 23 Sept 1869 in Green Co, Wisconsin to Harriet Winkler, the daughter of Thomas Winkler and Elizabeth Bailey. Harriet was first cousin to Scyndisa. One known child was born to William and Harriet: Rufus Lee Layton. William’s third wife was Mary Ann Brown, the daughter of Joshua G. and Love Brown, and the widow of Peter Fisher. The marriage record for William and Mary has not been found, but they are counted together in the 1880 census in Hampton, Iowa with two of her three Fisher children: George and Willard. Mary Ann's death date and burial location are unknown, however, it is believed she died ca 1890 in North Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. William’s fourth wife was Laura A. Brown, who had been previously married to Ira P Wood. William and Laura were married on 6 Sep 1891 in Pierce Co, Wisconsin. Laura died in Puyallup, Pierce, Washington on 8 Jan 1916; as of this writing she is not listed at findagrave. William David "WD" Layton was a Farmer, a Soldier, and a Drayman.
