Howard was born in Manson County Illinois, January 31, 1848, and was two years old upon coming to Harrison County, Iowa and as soon as he was old enough became the mainstay of the family. At the age of seventeen years he commenced working out by the month, following this for two years, when he married Minerva Wood November 24 1868, the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Merrill) Wood. He lived upon a rented farm two years, and then bought his present place, eight acres of which cost him $2.50 per acre. He built a house from lumber hauled from Council Bluffs, which cost him $30 per thousand feet. He has since added to his farm until it contains one hundred eighty acres, one half of which is under the plow. The hardest times our subject ever experienced were from 1878 to 1880, during the grasshopper raid. Mr. and Mrs. Howard have a family of eight children - William S., Henry F., George W., Minnie E., David, Fred A., Mary L. and Charles. FROM LOGAN HERALD-OBSERVER (May 16, 1918) W. D. HOWARD DEAD Word came to Logan that W. D. Howard, an old time resident of Union township had died this morning. He had not been in bad health and his death was unexpected as the relatives had planned a Golden wedding celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Howard on their anniversary which was to come soon. Mr. Howard was a respected citizen of the of the community and well known over the county because of his long residence here. FROM LOGAN HERALD-OBSERVER (May 23, 1918) LIVED IN COUNTY 66 YEARS W. D. Howard of Union Township Passed Away after a long Lifetime spent on the Farm. W. D. Howard, who died at his home in Union Township Thursday, May 16th, was born at Whitehall, Illinois, January 31st, 1849, and was 69 years, three months and 15 days old when taken from a life of activity and industry to the life beyond the grave. He came with his parents to this county when he was but three years of age, and had lived in the county continuously almost for 66 years, and he has lived on the same farm for 47 years of that time. He was married June 24th, 1868, to Minerva Wood and to them nine children were born, eight of them living to mourn the loss of a loving and kind father. Those still living are W. S., Bigelow, MN; Frank, Persia; George, Hood River, Oregon; Mrs. Minnie Weaver, Omaha; David J., Saskatoon, Canada; Mrs. Lottie Fackler, Wayside, Nebraska; Charley and Harry, Miami, Oklahoma. Mr. Howard was a well known man throughout Harrison County. He was an industrious and thrifty citizen, well respected throughout the community where his entire life had been spent. He was a genial, jovial friend, a kind father and a faithful loving husband to the wife who is left alone to spend the evening hours of life. Mr. Howard passed from this life as he had expressed the wish that he might go when his time came, suddenly and without suffering. He was not sick over half an hour. The funeral was held at the late home Tuesday, May 31st, the service being conducted by an old neighbor and friend, Elder Sidney Pitt. The interment was in Valley View Cemetery.
