I remember him he lived in the duplex next to the old health department on Forrest avenue he eventually went to work at Camden police as a dispatcher. Email on 12-25-2021: My Uncle Dewey Lashlee, Gone But Not Forgotten By Charlotte Johnson Benson Let me tell you a little about one of my favorite uncles. His name was William Dewey Lashlee. Camden folks knew him as Dewey. Anyway, it all began when James Calvin Lashlee (1831-1885) married his second wife, Martha Almira Hollingsworth Arnold. (Martha's first husband was John M. Arnold and they had three children.) James had an interest in Henry County and Houston County. Perhaps he is buried in Houston County with his first wife or in Henry County with his second wife. Brett W. Lashlee said, "I believe 'Lashlee Light' on the Tennessee River across from Big Sandy/Paris Landing area is named for James Calvin Lashlee. His father, Burwell had extensive landholdings and I think James Calvin was the only one who would leave Benton County to take his father's land 'across the river'." In research the name "Lashlee" is sometimes spelled as 'Lashley". James Calvin had a son named Stephen that ran a grocery store. Perhaps it was the S.W. Lashlee store in a 1910 picture from McKinnon TN. Burwell Lashlee was noted as an early settler in the Beaverdam Creek area, coming from NC in 1775. Burwell's father was Lewis Lashley and he had a son named Burwell Lashlee Jr. born in 1829. It is important to go by dates so as not to get the two confused. (An old cemetery is located off Beaverdam Lodge Road). The marriage of James Calvin and Martha (her second marriage) was on April 30,1876 in Benton County. They had three children: Trophenia "Trofeany" Lashlee Brown Morgan (1881-1953), Luna "Lunie" Myrtle Lashlee Arnold (1888-1973) and Walter Lashlee (1877-1900). Lunie was born in Huntington, TN, married Carl Arnold and died in area of Hugo, OK. Trofeany had a son named Wade Brown. She died in Hardeman County, TN. My Aunt Rachel Jordan recalled many years ago that Trofeany lived in Arkansas, near Memphis TN. She was called "Aunt Finei" and it was said she had money but her house burnt down. Trofeany came by taxi to Rachel's (Sawyers TN area) and wanted to live with them. Rachel had just cleaned house and did not want her to be there because she spit everywhere and ate out of serving bowls. (I recall, in those days spitting in a can and using tobacco/snuff) was common. On December 1, 1897 in Carroll County, Walter Lashlee married Hattie Jane Hicks Lashlee (1881-1966). Hattie was 17 years old and Walter was about 19 years old when they got married. William Dewey was born October 8, 1898. Walter died from pneumonia, leaving his two-year-old, son, Dewey. I am sure my grandmother Hattie and her young son was cared for by her parents, William Robert Hicks and Mahala (McCord) Hicks. The 1900 census shows Hattie and son living with her parents. Dewey married Vadie Marie Holland in 1916. They were not related but somehow I was related to both of them. (Dewey Lashlee (1898-1979) was my mother, Millidean Jordan Johnson half-brother). (Vadie Holland Lashlee's mother was my mother's half-sister, Ada Elizabeth Jordan Holland). Ada (1876-1923) and James W. Holland were the parents of: Velzie (1898-!970), Verlie (Spence) (1896-1983), Vadie (Lashlee) (1900-1981), Addie (Oxford), Elver (Hicks), Arlie V. Holland (1907-1979), and Gilbert Holland. According to old church papers, Dewey and Vadie were members of Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church in the Sawyers Mill community near Camden, TN. I remember they went with us to revival services there at my childhood church. A cousin said Dewey was a traveling salesman with his half-brother, Hershel Jordan for a short time. Dewey lived in Huntingdon at one time and had a grocery store. For a while they lived in Nashville, TN. It was around 1940's to1950's. He worked as a state prison guard, warden, or superintendent. He worked in the men's prison and then was promoted to the women's prison in Nashville. They were provided living quarters on government property to live in. I barely remember visiting them when they lived in a large old house in Nashville. Being little, I thought their house was huge and scary. I remember an old metal elevator. I never was in it but it went to the apartment upstairs. My favorite memory was the ice cream truck driving by their house, playing music and selling ice cream. That was something new to me, being a little girl from Camden. I remember staying overnight with them in Camden and loved Aunt Vadie's feather bed! Her great-granddaughter recalls a memory of visiting at their house and Aunt Vadie would sit in her living room chair and spit tobacco in a coffee tin. Billy enjoyed telling about how his Grannie (Hattie) Jordan got excited about getting to ride in his 1963 Corvette. (I wonder what our grandchildren will remember about us!) As I got older and interested in genealogy, I began thinking about Uncle Dewey. Why did we know so little about his Lashlee ancestors? He seemed different from my other uncles because he was tall, large build with broad shoulders. I was not surprised to learn he was a prison guard and later lived in Camden where he was a deputy sheriff. His mother, Hattie and step-father, J.P. Jordan had children: Hershel Lee, Cecil Nelson, Lindell Josiah and Mildred Millidean Jordan Johnson. J.P. Jordan's youngest child by first wife was Willie Wester Jordan (1894-1968). As Dewey got older, having a half-sister, and three half-brothers did not bother him for he considered all as family. It took some time to adjust to having a step-brother only four years older than him. He also had step-siblings: George W., James W., Ada, Ida, Addie, Ludie, and Zadie. When Hattie married J.P. Jordan, Dewey decided he wanted to stay where he was living and he was allowed to stay with his mother's family at the Hicks homeplace. Dewey and Vadie had one daughter, Dessie Lashlee Florence Nolan (1919-1991). From having one daughter, they had nine grandchildren. Dessie married Lindell Florence and they had Bobby, Billy, and Linda. With her second husband she had Rachel Ann Brown. Dessie's last husband was Leaburn Nolan. They had Brenda, Dwayne, Pam, Terry, and David. Dessie's stepson, Ronald Nolan lived around Camden. Dessie and family moved from Camden to Illinois in 1955. I wonder where the grandkids slept when they visited their grandparents in Camden, in a two-bedroom duplex? To me it seemed they came a lot since they lived as far away as Chicago. In later years, Leaburn and Dessie moved back to Camden. They seemed to be happy living back home, in their retirement years. In various states, they have three living children. J.P. Jordan and his first wife, Mary Ballard were buried at Mt. Carmel Methodist Cemetery. Walter and Hattie were buried at Pleasant Hill Methodist Cemetery. Dewey, Vadie, daughter Dessie, son-in-law Leaburn Nolan, and grandchildren: Bobby and Linda were buried next to them at Camden City Cemetery. The cemeteries are located in Benton County TN. My loved ones should not be forgotten when they die. Neither remembered only by monuments. Generations to come need to know about their ancestors and learn their history. We can learn much from good and not so good history.
