A descendant of worthy and sterling ancestors of the old Keystone state and he himself a man of many commendable qualities, the kind that never fail to win in life's battles, if properly applied and directed, as they have evidently been done in this instance, is William D. Boyd, one of the best known citizens of Liscomb township and a man who is in every way eminently entitled to representation in a history of Marshall county. Mr. Boyd was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, May 23, 1839, and he is the son of Douglas Boyd, a complete sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this work; suffice it to say here that he was always regarded as a man of splendid characteristics. The subject was reared in his native community and received his education in the public schools there, spending his early life in Pennsylvania. On November 5, 1865, he came to Marshall county, Iowa, locating in Liscomb township, beginning life in true pioneer fashion, moving into a log house and starting to work in improving raw land, buying forty acres in 1866, where he has since resided, developing an excellent farm and establishing a good home. He also owns timbered land in Hardin county. He has lived to see this township grow from the wild and sparsely settled prairie of a half century ago to one of the best farming communities in the great Hawkeye state and he has done his full share in the transformation. He has engaged in general farming and stock raising and has made a very comfortable living, rearing his family in plenty and respectability. Politically, Mr. Boyd is a Republican. and he has been loyal to the party, having cast his first vote for Lincoln. He has never been an aspirant for office. He and his family are members of the Reformed church. Mr. Boyd was married on December 25, 1860, to Barbara Engle, who was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, October 26, 1840. She was the daughter of Solomon and Christina (Keim) Engle, the former a native of Pennsylvania, his father having come to America in the old colonial days and was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. Christina Keim was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, and there she and her husband lived and died. He was a farmer and miller and was an industrious and highly honored citizen there in the early days. His death occurred on January 16, 1902, at the advanced age of eighty-five years, his wife dying on January 11th, the same year, preceding her husband to the mystic land only a few days. She was eighty-one years old. They were the parents of twelve children, nine of whom are living. To Mr. and Mrs. Boyd the following children have been born: Naoma died in infancy, October 19, 1861; Elmer Ellsworth, born November 5, 1863, is a blacksmith in Liscomb; he married Eliza Weatherly and they have thirteen children, of whom ten are living; Ida E. Boyd, born February 23, 1867, is the wife of Josiah Mast, of near Grundy Center, Iowa; they live on a farm and have five children, Iva L., Lydia, Harry, Guy L. and Clara. William Homer Boyd was born November 16, 1870, and is living at home. - - - - - - - - - William married Barbara Engle, 25 December 1860 in Elk Lick Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.
