Description	:	Third son of six boys and two girls of Mitchell & Sarah Foster Reed His family moved to Iowa locating in Wapello County in 1855. Three years later the family moved to Amity Township, Page County, IA. Three years after that they moved to the farm one half mile north of Braddyville, IA, were they lived since. Three years later the family moved to Amity Township, Page County, IA. Three years after that they moved to the farm one half mile north of Braddyville, IA, were they lived since. He had many fond memories of holidays at his grandmother Mary Clark's home. The Clark home is now occupied by Tom Johnston family and then stood where the Shambaugh home is now located. William also remembers when at 10 years old, the exciting times of the Civil War. He had a favorite sentry who was doing picket duty. His beat beat being along the south side of the Reed farm and close to the Missouri line, and kept the Union Army kept this line well guarded. He had a gun and soldier coat provided by the sentry in exchange for huge slices of fresh bread and butter, and eaten together as they picketed. William was the only son who was interested in his father's trade as a wagonmaker. He love to use his father's tools and work with wood. His father took him with him to timber and taught him to cut the wood for different parts of the wagon. He became versed in wood-lore knew when the sap was right so there was no shrinkage. He knew of all the different kinds of wood. His father wanted him to be a wagon maker but William had other ideas. The old Braddyville Mill was on the Nodaway had a fascination for him and he spent all of his spare time there. Finally he made a miniature mill of his own on a branch of his fathers farm, it was very complete. When he finally wanted to learn the milling trade his father did not oppose him. His winters as he grew were spent in a log school house and his summers farming. He broke the land in the bottom north of Braddyville on what is now highway 71. He married Lydia H Martin (daughter of Nathan & Margaret Martin) on 17 January 1878. They pioneered to Blue Hill, NE in a covered wagon where he filed on a Tree Claim. They lived there for ten years and in spite of hail, grasshoppers, drought and hot winds, they prospered. They then moved to Hastings, NE where they remained for 5 years and then traded for half interest in a mill in Blue Hill, NE, which burned down in 1898. He then spent many years working in several mills including that of Ira Shambaugh, for some ten years. They had two children Alice A and Harvey Reed. In October 1916, he married Emma S King of Clarinda and they lived at their home on 14th Street. He loved working in fresh earth and kept his garden planted and weeded. He was known as a man of quiet and retiring nature, a pains-taking workman, always putting his best efforts into every task.
