Ferns was born November 25, 1894, at Venango, Nebraska, and passed away October 28, 1962. As a child he went to What Cheer, where he graduated from high school in 1913. He attended Drake University and the Des Moines Business College. He married Florence Goodman September 14, 1927, at Storm Lake and in 1928 they moved to Anthon. He served in the Navy during World War I and was a member of the Sportsman Club, McNiff Post of the American Legion, Methodist Church and Cerulean Lodge of which he was a past master. He was a member of the Anthon school board for twelve years and was town treasurer for twelve years. He was owner/operator of the Ferns Feed & Seed Store before retiring. Survivors include the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Harder of Littleton, Colorado, and Mrs. Lavonne Draegert of Englewood, Colorado, and a son, Ralph W. Ferns of Spencer, his mother, Mrs. Alice Ferns of What Cheer, four brothers, Lloyd of Iowa City, Raymond of Barnes City, Claude and Harold both of What Cheer and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Anthon with Rev. Wesley M. Frank officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, under direction of Walter Funeral Home. Members of McNiff Post American Legion conducted military rites and members of Cerulean Lodge AF&AM held Masonic rites.
