WILLIAM McCULLY (Farmer, Section 16, Post-office, Cherry Box). One of the most influential and prosperous farmers in the township is the subject of this sketch. His parents, John and Sarah (White) McCully, were both natives of Tennessee, and moved first to Illinois. In 1820 they again moved to Randolph county, Mo., where Mr. McCully became a man of weight and prominence. He took a great interest in public affairs, and was made collector of the county. William was one of eight children: Valentine, John, Isaac L. and Mary. Two are deceased. His mother died when still quite young, and his father married, in 1846, Miss Lucy Brainer, from Kentucky. By this marriage also there were eight children, of whom six are still living: Martha, Belle, Manty, Thomas, Lee and Frank. William, who was the third child of the first union, was reared in Randolph county, Mo., and became a farmer. In that county, on the 21st of March, 1850, he was united in the bonds of holy wedlock to Miss Frances C. Yates, a native of Kentucky. Ten years after his marriage Mr. McCully moved to Shelby county, where he is now one of the leading men. He owns a farm of 920 acres, all in the best condition, and contributes largely to the general prosperity. Mr. and Mrs. McC. have seven children: John M., William C., Sarah C., George E., Thomas M., Lucy, Virginia and Mary E. Most of his family are members of the Presbyterian Church. Another of Shelby's old old citizens has passed away, and another connection between these and the pioneer days has been severed. The subject of this brief sketch was born in Randolph county, Missouri, June 4, 1828, and died at his home in Shelby October 18, 1901. His father, John McCully settled in Howard county, this state, as early as 1828, and that year in that part which became Randolph William was born. In 1850 he married Frances C. Gates (sic) and they settled in Shelby ten years later. Mr. McCully became an extensive farmer and stock raiser near Cherry Box and spent the remainder of his days there. He was a man of much intelligence, hospitable and always honest and neighborly. He married the second time eight years ago, Mrs. Mary E. vandiver, widow of S. A. Vandiver. To him and his first wife were born seven children, all living and all present at his death. They are, Dr. John M. of Shelbina, Wm. C., a farmer near Cherry Box, Sarah Collins near LaPlata, Georgie E., wife of W. E. McCully of Macon, Mary Hudson near Cherry Box, Dr. Thos. M. living near Novelty, and Virginia Sterling near Cherry Box. Deceased has been partially paralyzed for seven years, and this finally caused his death. he was buried in the Cumberland Presybterian church yard near his home by his old neighbors and friends. McCully died at his home near Cherry Box, this county last Friday and was buried Saturday afternoon in the New Providence C. P. Church cemetery. Mr. McCully's health had been poor tor some two or three years, he fearing suffered from paralysis. He was one of our oldest and most respected citizens. From t he Clarence Courier we clip the following concerning this good man and his family. William McCully was born in Randolph county, Missouri, June 4, 1828, and was married to Miss Francis C. Yates in 1850. They moved to Shelby county in 1860, and located on the present home place just south of Cherry Box. To this union were born seven children, all of whom still survive and are, Dr. John M. of Shelbina, Wm. C. who lives on an adjoining farm to that of his father, Sarah C, the wife of J. M. Collins, of near Laplata, Georgia E. wife of RailRoad Commission W. E. McCully, of Macon, Mary E. wife of John H. Hudson, of Cherry Box, Dr. Thomas M. of Novelty, and Lucy V. wife of Charles H. Sterling, of Cherry Box. Mrs. Francis C. McCully died April 1, 1891, and he was married November 21, 1893, to Mrs Mary E. Vandiver, wife of ex Representative Vandiver, deceased. He also leaves a brother, John, a sister, Mrs. Mary Hicks, of Lamar, Mo., and a half brother, Frank McCully. Wm. McCully was a man of strong and firm convictions. Personally he was cordial; sociable with those who knew him, and had many friends. He was not connected with any church yet he gave freely to their support and was what is called a man of charities. The poor unfortunate was never turned from his door. From a business standpoint he was honest, shrewd and active, and a success. He leaves an estate worth at least $30,000 including over 800 acres of good land. During his life he rendered valuable and efficient service to society and to the business interests of the community. In politics he was a strong worker, in education he took a leading part and was school director for years. In every matter pertaining to the welfare or eley ation of the community he was found in the advance guard. A large crowd attended the funeral Saturday to pay their last respects to the memory of the deceased neighbor and citizen.
