Description	:	The son of Aaron E and Jemima Pettee of Paris, N.Y. William was a Civil War veteran, he first joined Co. I 117th New York Infantry at Clayville, N.Y 15 August 1862, gave his age as 18 years, and a mechanic by occupation. Records state that he deserted the regiment on 16 August 1862. I 117th New York Infantry at Clayville, N.Y 15 August 1862, gave his age as 18 years, and a mechanic by occupation. Records state that he deserted the regiment on 16 August 1862. This may be a mistake, as so many men enlisted in the 117th, that there were a surplus of soldiers, and many were reenlisted in the 146th New York Infantry. The records show that William enlisted in this regiment 22 August 1862, and was later promoted to Corporal and Sergeant. William was killed during the battle of the Wilderness Va. 5 May 1864. The Utica Morning Herald" of 29 May 1866 gives a sketch of the life of William, stating that he served at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, with great courage. At the battle of the Wilderness, William was listed as 'missing in action', and his family hoped that he had been captured, but as time ebbed away with no information on his whereabouts, it was felt that he had been killed. Colonel James Grindlay wrote to Williams father Aaron, in 1866, that some soldiers who had returned to the regiment after the battle had seen William killed, and his body had been left on the field. The killed from this battle were initially buried in the 'Wilderness National Cemeteries"1 and 2. The great majority were in unmarked graves, 10 to a plot. After about a year, the remains were reinterred in the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. William is buried in an unmarked plot. In 1879, Williams mother Jemima applied for pension, and received one - number 189669, until her death in 1881. The GAR Post No. 86, at Clayville, N.Y which was opened in 1872, was name in honour of William H Pettee. William has a memorial marker in the family plot at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery in Clayville, N.Y.
