Earl Shields of Norfolk, for twenty years one of the most widely-known traveling men in this section, was instantly killed between 12:30 and 1 o'clock this afternoon, when his car ran off the grade on Highway No. 8, twelve miles east of O'Neill, at what is known as Kohler's corner, and was badly wrecked. The accident is believed to have been caused by a tire blow-out. A passer-by saw the wreckage and notified the sheriff at O'Neill. The body was taken to Biglen's undertaking parlors there. "Mr. Shields head struck the windshield with such force as to break the glass and it is thought his neck may be broken. He was a traveling representative of the Independent Baking company of Moama, having held that position for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Shields were married more than twenty years ago. Funeral will be held Sunday at Norfolk with burial in Prospect Hill cemetery. "The accident was caused by blowing out of the left front tire while he was traveling toward Norfolk. The blowout caused the car to go into a ditch, but Mr. Shields was able to keep his machine under control, marks in the ditch indicate. However, it struck some chicken fence or wire and swerved against a tree. When the automobile struck the tree, Mr. Shields was thrown against the steering wheel with such force that he chest was crushed, causing instant death. Friends believe that if the car had not struck the fence or wire and had been and been deflected against the tree, Mr. Shields would have been able to drive safely out of the ditch. The car was badly wrecked." "He was a traveling representative of the the Independent Baking company of Omaha, having held that position for many years." He was born March 21, 1887 at Hildreth, Nebraska. He was survived by his wife, his mother Mrs. Alice Shields at Holdrege, 1 sistter Mrs. Hugh Ware at Holdrege, 2 brothers: George at Lincoln, Fred [city not shown]. He was a World war veteran.
