Description	:	William Edward “Bill” Schnackenberg, 86, of Junction City, Kansas, died Sept. 14, 2015, at Brookdale Assisted Living of Junction City. Bill was born July 4, 1929, in Custer County, the son of Eduard and Margaret (Ostendorf) Schnackenberg. Bill attended schools in Farnam, and graduated from Farnam High School. Read More	William Edward “Bill” Schnackenberg, 86, of Junction City, Kansas, died Sept. 14, 2015, at Brookdale Assisted Living of Junction City. Bill was born July 4, 1929, in Custer County, the son of Eduard and Margaret (Ostendorf) Schnackenberg. Bill attended schools in Farnam, and graduated from Farnam High School. He later graduated from Kearney State College. Bill entered the U.S. Marine Corps. in 1952 and served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge as a Sergeant in the Marines in 1954, Bill taught and coached in Nebraska for a short time, and later came to Junction City, where he was a longtime biology teacher at Junction City High School. He also managed Camp Tomah Shinga, south of Junction City. Bill was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Science Department Association at Junction City High School, the American Legion and VFW Posts in Bella Vista, Arkansas, the Kansas-National Education Association and the Kansas Who’s Who. Bill married Della Lehman on Aug. 15, 1948, in Gothenburg. After his retirement, Bill and Della lived for a time in Bella Vista, Arkansas, until Della’s death on Sept. 30, 2009. Bill then moved back to Junction City, where he resided until his death. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert Schnackenberg. Survivors include a son, Paul Schnackenberg, of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Kathy (Gale) Bassett, of Junction City, Kristine (Scott) Wheeler, of Augusta, and Sue Hourigan, who Bill and Della treated as a daughter; two sisters, Irene Viter, of Gothenburg, and Mary (Laurel) Etlicher, of Barron, Wisconson; five grandchildren, Jacob (Shanna) Bassett and Josh Bassett, all of Rogers, Arkansas, Jered Wheeler and Hannah Wheeler, both of Augusta, and Gracie Schnackenberg, of Dallas, Texas; and a great-granddaughter, Monroe Bassett, of Rogers, Arkansas. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Faith Lutheran Church in Junction City, with Pastor Cynthia Schnaath officiating. Nebraska services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, at the American Lutheran Church, Gothenburg, with Pastor Lonna Grabenstein officiating. At the request of Bill, his body has been cremated. Inurnment will be at the Gothenburg City Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U.S. Marine Honor Guard at the cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, Junction City, is in charge of arrangements.
