Albert Halliwell. Burial in Bethany Cemetery. W. E. CARMICHAEL DIES SUDDENLY AT HOME HERE Wm. Edward Carmichael, for fifty-seven years a resident of this county, died suddenly at his home in Shelbyville Monday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock, death recurring as a result of an injury sustained during the Civil War. He had been in poor health for a year, but did not become seriously ill until last Thursday. He was feeling better Monday and ate a hearty meal at noon. He left the table and went to his room and in five minutes was dead. Mr. Carmichael was a native of W. Virginia, having been born in Hampshire county, that state, January 10, 1846. At the age of fifteen he enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving under the command of Stonewall Jackson. During his service he was struck in the head by a fragment of shell which caused a depressed fracture of the skull. He never fully recovered from this injury and results of it caused his death. In 1871 he was married to Miss Mattie Ellen Turner, who survives, together with four children, two sons and two daughters: Chas. F., of East St. Louis; W. E. Jr., of this county; Mrs. John Tingle, also of this county, and Mrs. Edna Walberg, of Denver, Colo. Two brothers, James Carmichael, of Shelbina, and D. A. Carmichael, of Leonard, also survive. Mr. Carmichael came to Shelby county shortly after the close of the Civil War and lived in Bethany vicinity until two years ago, when he and his wife moved to Shelbyville. He was a successful farmer and a good citizen and was highly esteemed and respected. He united with the church at Mt. Zion many years ago, where he held his membership until two years ago, when he became a member of the Baptist Church of this city. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Albert Halliwell. Burial will be in Bethany cemetery.
