Colwell passed away after an illness of a few weeks. Mr. Colwell was past 81 years of age but had, until the commencement of his last and only illness, gone out to his farm almost every day, even thru the most severe winter weather, and even when stricken with his fatal illness he would not give up and fought it off until its serious nature forced him to give up and go to bed. He had been ill about four weeks and this illness was the first time in his life that he had been bedfast. Mr. Colwell was one of our most substantial farmers, who, by sticking to his job early and late throughout the years of his life, had met with unusual success. William Edward Colwell, son of James and Eunice Colwell, was born at Kentville, Kings county, Nova Scotia, February 2, 1843, passed away at his home April 13, 1924 at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 11 days. In 1870 he left Nova Scotia for the United States stopping at Boston, Mass., and followed the carpenter's trade for a few months, then went to Colorado a short time coming to Kansas and first stopped at Johnston county. Then he came on to Cloud county, homesteading a farm four miles northeast of Glasco, which he farmed until his illness. He had braved the hard times and hardships alone with the early settlers. Mr. Colwell was the last son of a family of nine children, four boys and five sisters, all of whom preceded him in death, but three sisters: Mrs. Carrie Jordan of Grafton, Nova Scotia, Mrs. Lizzie Austin of Olathe, Kansas and Mrs. Maggie Woodman, Las Animas, Colorado. He was united in marriage to Miss Bell Tabler, Nov. 26, 1875, to which union were born two children, a son Lazelle, who died at the age of 10 years and 9 months, and a daughter, Mrs. Dell Wealand, who with her husband and mother were at constant attendance at the bedside during the illness and all that loving hands and medical attention could do for him was to no avail......... Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, from the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Enveart. Interment was in Glasco cemetery. Pallbearers were: J. M. Davidson, Bert Hill, John Martin, John Bullock, John Harper, and W. A. Hillhouse.
