Connelley.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE KINSLEY MERCURY Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas Thursday, October 24, 1957 William Edward Smith, oldest child of Esau and Charlotte Smith, who were emigrants from England, was born near Springfield, Ill., on June 2, 1872, and passed away at the Kinsley hospital Oct. 10, 1957, at the age of 85 years, four months and eight days. He came to Pawnee county, with his parents, in March of 1879, and has been a resident of the Burdett community for the past 78 years. He spent his school days at the old brick schoolhouse in Sawmill township. He took the last homestead in Pawnee county and shared the hardships of pioneer life in western Kansas. On March 12, 1911, he was united in marriage to Nellie Dillinger and to this union were born five children. Being a good neighbor, he took active interest in community affairs. He was a charter stockholder of the Norris State Bank and served on its board for over 30 years. He helped in organizing the Farmers Co-op elevator and served on its board for 13 years. He helped in organizing the Burdett Telephone Co. and served as a board member for 19 years. He also served for many years on the Sawmill township board and on the Brick school board. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: John, George, Charles and Arthur; two sisters, who died in childhood; and infant daughter and two sons, Clayton and Glenn. Surviving him are: two sons, Clinton and Leroy of Burdett; a brother, Frank of Burdett; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Gee of Palm City, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. ___ Contributed by Swede 47330563
