Description	:	William Eliod Shrader was born to Philip and Clarissa (Cheadle) Shrader in March 1832 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta. His maternal grandfather and great grandfather, Asa Cheadle, Jr., and Asa Cheadle, Sr., respectively, were both Revolutionary War veterans. His great grandfather also served in the 1757 and 1758 campaigns of the French and Indian War. William had ten siblings: Salina, Catherine M., Martin Luther, Nathaniel Green, John, Philip J., Isaac Lamar, Joseph W., Mary J., and Jasper. William had ten siblings: Salina, Catherine M., Martin Luther, Nathaniel Green, John, Philip J., Isaac Lamar, Joseph W., Mary J., and Jasper. By 1853, William had moved to Athens County, Ohio and it was here he met Mary Ann Bennett. They were married September 24, 1853 and together had eight children, Nancy J., James M., Mary Elizabeth, John W., Frank M., Clara "Clarissa" Lillian, Ira Parker, and Leslie Hershel. William registered for the Civil War draft in June 1863 and enlisted in Company A, 141st Ohio National Guard Infantry on May 2, 1864. His records then show he was AWOL as of September 1, 1864 and later was listed as a deserter. He was married with four children at the time he enlisted, so one must wonder if that fact contributed to his decision to go AWOL. In the early 1870s, the Shrader family moved to Arion Township, Cloud County, Kansas. By March 1896, the family purchased a home on East Seventh Street in Concordia and moved into town. William passed away June 14, 1904 at the age of 72 years in Concordia and is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery next to Mary Ann.
