He spent his youth on the family farm before joining the U.S. Army and serving in Japan in 1947 and 1948. The amazing life of William Ellis Browne ended peacefully on February 3, 2016. Bill was born on August 6, 1929 in Stevensville, Va. He spent his youth on the family farm before joining the U.S. Army and serving in Japan in 1947 and 1948. Thereafter, Bill attended the University of Richmond, graduating in 1953 and becoming a lifelong supporter of the Spiders, as well as Theta Chi fraternity. As a lover of music, literature and the arts, Bill spent most of his working career teaching high school English and drama at Highland Springs High School in Henrico County, Va. One of his proudest moments was being selected as a Dominion Foundation scholar in 1970. This allowed him to spend the 1970 to 1971 academic year studying at Yale University, where the guest lecturers included author Eric Segal and noted architect, Vincent Scully, amongst many famous others. In his role as educator, he influenced hundreds of lives as his devotion and enthusiasm was felt by students and faculty alike. Many of his former students and fellow teachers remained his lifelong friends. In his retirement, he most enjoyed his time at the beach (any beach), reading, socializing and hosting gatherings of friends and family. He made friends wherever he went and he could turn any event into a party; memories of some of those parties will live forever with those he's left behind. Bill is survived by his two nephews, Chris and Mike Currie and their wives, Julie and Lucy, respectively. Additionally, he is survived by six grandnephews and their spouses, Matt and Lorraine Currie of Edinburgh, Scotland, Scott and Ashley Currie of Houston, Texas, David Currie of San Antonio, Texas, Lindsey and Raleigh Currie of Richmond, Va., Emily and Luke Walter of Alexandria, Va., and Tyler Currie and his fiance, Lian Putnam of Richmond, Va. Bill also leaves behind many friends too numerous to list. We will all miss Bill's sharp wit, his incredible command of the English language and, above all, his humanity. He was lucky to touch so many lives and we were lucky to be a part of his. He will be greatly missed. The family would like to especially thank Bill's close friend, Joan, for her caring and attention during Bill's final days. Thanks for being there. At Bill's request, there will be no funeral or memorial service, however friends and family are invited to attend a gathering at Hayashi Sushi Bar and Grill, 2160 John Rolfe Pkwy., Richmond, Va., on February 21, 2016, between 4:30 and 6 p.m., where we will raise a glass and toast a life well-lived. No flowers, please. Any donations may be made to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts or your favorite local charity.
