Description	:	William Greenwaldt was born in Schwedt, Treptow, Germany on September 2, 1839. He had sisters, Eureka and Lena, and brothers, John, Herman, Karl, and August. He grew to adulthood in Germany and served in the Army Ninth Regiment, Company Six at Steten in 1860. On November 15, 1864, he married Henrietta Kroneng at Drosdow by Colberg. He served as corporal in the war against Austria, and again in 1870-71, in the war against France. Sons, Henry, William, and Charley were born in Germany. He had sisters, Eureka and Lena, and brothers, John, Herman, Karl, and August. He grew to adulthood in Germany and served in the Army Ninth Regiment, Company Six at Steten in 1860. On November 15, 1864, he married Henrietta Kroneng at Drosdow by Colberg. He served as corporal in the war against Austria, and again in 1870-71, in the war against France. Sons, Henry, William, and Charley were born in Germany. In 1873, the family came to America and resided at Streater in LaSalle County, Illinois, for five years. A daughter, Minnie, was born there on October 30, 1873. They moved to Iowa, Massena Township of Cass County. The farm was located south, across from Massena No. 6 school, where now there is only a grove of trees. A daughter, Grace, was born there July 29, 1880. Mrs. Greenwaldt's mother, Friedreka, wife of Christoph Kroneng, lived there in a small house in their yard. The children grew and attended school and church in this rural area. Marriages were: Henry to Mary Murray; William, Jr. to Hattie Belle Zellers; Charley to Lena Maas; Minnie to Ernest Westphal; and Grace to Dave Brisler. They all lived and farmed nearby. On January 12, 1913, Mrs. Greenwaldt passed away. Then on September 8, 1913, a son, Charley, died. For 11 years following his wife's death, William lived with his daughter, Grace, and family. He enjoyed spending time gardening and working in their fruit orchard. The years during World War I were stressful to him, because he had family in Germany and had been back there earlier to visit relatives. He spent some time visiting in the home of his granddaughter, Pearl. Many large family gatherings were held at the Brislers. His family had grown to include 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He died at the Brisler home on December 4, 1924. Interment was in the Massena Township Cemetery.
