Mercier Passes Away After Brief Illness The community was shocked last Saturday to learn that W.F. Mercier had passed away at 4 o'clock that morning at his home on Allyn avenue. Mr. Mercier had not been in robust health for about two or three months, having had occasional heart pains. Another trouble caused him to submit to an operation some three weeks ago but his heart was strong under the ordeal and he made rapid and apparently perfect recovery. But after returning home from the hospital the pains in his heart continued with more frequent recurrence until, for several days before the end. Mr. Mercier was compelled to remain at his home. His death came suddenly and was caused from an acute attack of angina pectoris. William F. Mercier was born at Princeton, Maine, January 10, 1863, and had, therefore, reached the age of 62 years, 2 months and 23 days. He attended the schools of Princeton and grew to manhood in his native place. When a young man he engaged in lumbering and with other members of his family acquired very large holdings of timber in Maine, together with several mills. He remained in this line of business until 1907 when he sold his interests and came to California, settling in Oakland, where he operated in real estate successfully. In June 1908 deceased came to St. Helena and purchased J.F. Helm's store, furniture and undertaking business, establishing a home here for himself and family. Later in the same year Mr. Mercier acquired the Hotel St. Helena which he remodeled and on several occasions conducted. In 1916 Mr. Mercier purchased the White Sulphur Springs from William Sandford, of Australia, brother of John Sandford, who had owned and conducted the resort for a number of years. Since purchasing White Sulphur Mr. Mercier has made many improvements at the resort, erecting a new bathhouse, large swimming tank, dance pavilion, a number of bungalows, developing a fine water supply and making many other improvements. Development and operating the White Sulpher Springs became a real hobby for Mr. Mercier and, leaving his furniture business to his son, he devoted practically all of his time at the resort, deriving great pleasure from his work and always enthusiastic over the virtues of the wonderful sulphur water. About three years ago he disposed of his undertaking business to P.W. Parmelee and since that time gave all of his untiring energy to the White Sulphurs. Deceased was married in Princeton, Maine, on his twenty-fourth birthday anniversary, January 10, 1887, to Miss Mary Horsman, who with one son, Roy H. Mercier and three grandchildren, survive. There are also left two brothers and three sisters residing in Maine. Deceased was a man of the strictest integrity, a successful businessman, a good citizen, a devoted husband and father, and a kind friend. The funeral which was private, took place from P.W. Parmelee's undertaking parlors Monday morning, the 5th inst., at 10:30 o'clock, Rev. Walter C. Subke officiating. The pallbearers were Walter Metzner, R.A. Blum, Carl Hilker, Harry Thorsen, E.P. Bellani and G.A. Sears. Interment took place in the St. Helena Cemetery.
