William used the MUMAW spelling all his life and that spelling is used in his obituary. All of his children and descendants used and continue to use the MOOMAW surname spelling. Many of the Mineral County birth records list his name as "Moomaw" as well as the children. There other "Moomaw" & "Moomau" families lived in the same county. Many of the Mineral County birth records list his name as "Moomaw" as well as the children. There other "Moomaw" & "Moomau" families lived in the same county. His marriage record uses the "Moomaw" spelling and it only identifies his parents as "Mr. Moomaw". Because of the listing of his father as "Moomaw", I believe the clerk wrote the spelling that they were familiar with. A careful examination of his mother's marriage records and census records, suggested that William was illegitimate and quite possibly his father's name was WEBB as listed in the 1850 census. Family lore claims he had an unhappy childhood and left home early. He used his mother's maiden name and apparently added the middle initial of "F", possibly after the surname his step-father, William Fadely. In addition the following statement was discovered in Harmon Webb's Will written on 6 Feb, 1849. Harmon was separated from his wife at that time. Harmon Webb died shortly after writing his Will. It said: "I give to my housekeeper Ann Mumaw, provided she stay with me while I live and does for me as she has been doing the sum of one hundred dollars in lieu of all other claims against me for services except for her wages at fifty cents a week - to her and her heirs forever." DNA testing of a descendant of William Mumaw/Moomaw and and two descendants of Harmon Webb has confirmed that William F Moomaw/Mumaw was the illegitimate son of Anna Mumaw and that Harmon Webb, b. 1784, was his likely father. William's mother was Anna C. Mumaw, born abt. 1823. After Harmon Webb died, Anna married William Fadely and after he died, she married Philip D. Dellinger.
