Schreiber, 80, pioneer Nebraska farmer and a well known resident of Platte and Colfax counties for 62 years, passed away at his home, 2415 Tenth street, at 10:30 a.m. yesterday after a lingering illness of two years duration. Death was due to dropsy and complications incident to advanced age, which had rendered him bedfast the last several weeks. For the last six months, Mr. Schreiber had been in extremely poor health, but until the last few weeks he had not been confined to his bed all of the time. Born in Brandenburg, Germany, Feb. 3, 1851, he came to America with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian Schreiber, when he was 16 years old, theirs being one of several families, including the John Bennings, that migrated to the United States at that time. They did not tarry in the east, but came westward as far as Chicago, and from there they were directed 90 miles south to Williamson county, Illinois, where for nearly two years, they labored in the sugar beet industry. When the factory was closed there in February, 1869, they, with the John Benning and Valentine Heibel families, came west by railroad to the Missouri river, which they crossed afoot on the ice, and made their train connections at Omaha for Columbus. Upon their arrival here, Mr. Schreiber's parents homesteaded 80 acres of government land in Platte county, eight miles northeast of the city. Severe climatic conditions prevailed throughout the winter, and the remained in town until spring, when they constructed a sod house on their land, which was replaced the following year by a log cabin. When Mr. Schreiber became of age, he homesteaded in Colfax county, a mile east of the Platte county line, where he began farming for himself. On June 6, 1879 at Christ Lutheran church on Shell creek, he and Miss Fredericke Benning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Benning, were married, their wedding marking the happy culmination of a childhood affection that had ripened into enduring love through the years that the two families were experiencing the hardships of pioneer life in this new western country. Two years ago, surrounded by their children and their children's children and nearly 160 relatives most of whom reside in Platte and surrounding counties, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a banquet given in their honor in Eagles hall. In 1887 they moved from their homestead in Colfax county to a larger farm in Bismark township, where in the years that ensued they were numbered among the prominent residents of the community. There Mr. Schreiber served for 14 ;years as moderator of school district No.. 2, road overseer for nine years, and represented his district as a member of the county board of supervisors in 1894-95. Later they located on another farm in Columbus township, southwest of their former home, and there again, Mr. Schreiber was active in public life, serving as treasurer of the township board for a term and as moderator of school district No. 44 for two years. Throughout the years they devoted to farming, Mr. and Mrs. Schreiber achieved, through industry and thrift, an enviable success which enabled them to retire from active farm life in October, 1921, when they moved into Columbus to enjoy the leisure which they so richly merited. At that time they turned their extensive land holdings over to their children. Of a deeply religious nature, Mr. Schreiber was, throughout his life, a devout member of the Lutheran faith. He and Mrs. Schreiber were charter members of three churches that were founded in the different communities in which they resided - Christ Lutheran, and St. John's Lutheran, north of Columbus, and Trinity Lutheran, in the city. While a member of St. John's, Mr. Schreiber served as secretary of the board for nine years. Besides Mrs. Schreiber, he leaves five sons and five daughters - William, Herman, Chris, Arthur and Walter Schreiber, Mrs. Robert Pohlner, Mrs. Frank Staub, Mrs. Arthur Runge, Mrs. Emil Brunken, and Miss Mary Schreiber - all of whom reside in or near Columbus, and 11 grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran church, preceded by a prayer service at the residence of 2415 Tenth street at 2 p.m., Rev. H. Goede, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be made in the St. John's cemetery north of Columbus.
