The first that I can remember of is when we lived in the Nate McDonald house, address was 1639 3rd Avenue South. I have a picture taken on the front porch of the house of my sister Alice, Ruth and myself taken in 1913. A few years before dad died I mentioned to him that I could remember when Ruth died we held the funeral in the front room of the house 1639 3rd Avenue South. The Rev. Jerome E. Wildermuth who lived at 12 14 Street South, Fargo, preached the sermon. A friend of Mother and Dad's, Pete Bart, held me on his lap to keep me quiet during the services. After the services a hack drawn by two dark bay colored horses with the driver sitting on a high seat, with my mother and dad sitting with their backs to the front of the hack, and my sister Alice and I facing the front of the hack. We had the little casket resting on our laps. The body was taken to the Prairie Home Cemetery for burial, located along MN highway 75 in South Moorhead, Minnesota. Ruth 4/26/11-8/11/13. The grave is located in the southeast corner of the cemetery. For many years prior to WWII it was not unusual for many men to be laid off for the winter months for those that worked in the building and road construction. There was no such thing as unemployment compensation. I don’t remember how many years or what years dad would load up his horses harnessed in a box car and ship out to Black Duck, Minnesota and would work in the woods from fall to spring. They would have to carry enough oats and hay for the trip. There would be stops along the way to water the horses. Men with horses would sleep in the same car with the horses. Between their blankets, horse blankets, and the heat from the horses they would keep warm. It was a tough life. I can remember one spring when we lived at No. 5 14th Street South, I came home from school at noon, dad was there, at first I did not know him as he had a full beard. Most of the lumber jacks would let their whiskers grow due to the cold weather. I guess it would get stinky when the lumber jacks would hang up their socks at night to dry by the stoves overnight. William Falconer sold soft water when we lived at 1339 3rd Avenue South. I am not sure but I believe he sold soft water in 1913-1914. He also had a hired man working for him selling water, they would get $.05 per 5 gal. Pail. From what I remember from the time he quit hauling water, he worked for the two years as barn foreman for the Horse Market, Huntoen and Holcomb, 415 1st Aven N, located at northeast corner of 4 Street and 1st Avenue North. I do not remember how many years that he had his own team of horses working on construction in the summer in the woods in the winter. One summer he worked paving at Mandan, N.D. for Haggart construction. 1917 William Falconer started to work for the Cass County Road Department as a tractor opertater. In those days they were called engineers. Having made foreman in 1920 he left in 1948 he then became self employed from 1953 to the time of his death. His main business was making wood crates for the rebuilt final drive hubs and steering shafts, first for Dakota Tractor then Butler Machinery Company. From his self employed business he was able to get social security.
