Gone was William F. Bailey, gone along with 940 other Civil War veterans whose names once were on the Godfrey Post's membership rolls. Death came to Mr. Bailey, 94, at the Sawtelle Soldiers' Home and Hospital Tuesday night. Ironically, the Godfrey Post met yesterday but the handful of aged "boys in blue" able to attend did not know of their comrade's passing. Word was waiting them when Mrs. Ethel Whinery, who assists the post, returned home late in the afternoon. Officer of the Day Mr. Bailey held the position of officer-of-the-day in the Godfrey post, to which he has belonged since Dec. 13, 1913. He had come here a number of years before joining and until a few years ago when his health began to fail he plied his trade as a bee-keeper, engaging both in the honey and olive business. He lived in La Crescenta at the time of his death but made his home in Pasadena most of his later years. Enlisted in Indiana Godfrey Post records show Mr. Bailey enlisted Oct. 4, 1862 as a private in Company I, Eleventh Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged July 26, 1865, as a corporal. He had appeared on a number of G.A.R. programs as a violinist. He entered the hospital six weeks ago. Funeral Tomorrow Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Sawtelle. Burial will be in the Sawtelle Soldiers' Cemetery. Not enough G.A.R. members will be physically able to attend to conduct a G.A.R. service, but a few of Mr. Bailey's comrades are expected to be on hand. Active even in failing health, Mr. Bailey was one of the Pasadena Civil War veterans who went to the Gettysburg reunion in July of last year. Remaining Comrades Godfrey Post comrades surviving Mr. Bailey: Commander William F. Hoch, who will be 96 on Dec. 6; Godfrey Lusher, who will be 100 in January; A. K. McQuilling, only surviving charter member, who will be 99 Wednesday; O. M. Haney, 94, W. M. Thomas and John W. Hartung, both 98; M. M. Buttles, 96; George W. Howard, 91; Albin Davis, 90; Elmus Jackson, 95, and B. M. Hampton, 97, who now lives in Florida. It is understood that Mr. Bailey leaves a sister, but her identity could not be learned last night.
