He was born on October 20th 1932 in Emporia, Kansas, to Dewey and Edna (Graves) Riggs. His older brother Jim and younger brother Dan survive Bill, the middle child, who was the renowned "Black Sheep" of the family. Bill was internationally recognized as a world-class adventurer, racecar driver, aviator, Antarctic explorer, Bigfoot hunter, ladies man, husband, father, mentor, political commentator, gun nut and mechanical genius. It is widely believed that he was the original inspiration for the "The Most interesting Man in the World" character featured in Dos XX commercials. Bill started his professional life as an aviation mechanic on the Boeing experimental flight line in Wichita, Kansas, doing things he claimed were top secret. Bill married his high school sweetheart, Alice McDowell, and had two daughters Aleta and Peggy. In 1969, after a successful life in the United States and several differences of opinion with the IRS, Bill moved to the remote and austere island of Grand Cayman with his 2nd wife, Margie and son, Scott, where he created the local Evinrude outboard motor empire. In 1980, Bill married his 3rd wife, Ann Smith, and started his third family, knowing that the third time is always a charm. In 2004 Hurricane Ivan completely demolished his beautiful seaside home that was poorly constructed and built in an area locals warned would be deadly during storms. Down, but not out, Bill and Ann returned to the US, settling in Emporia, Kansas, as a base of operations to renew their globe trotting lifestyle. Bill's love of adventure and flying, generally within sight of the airport and only on clear days, led him to establish his social network at the Emporia Municipal Airport where he was able to provide hours of political commentary and keen insight to other like minded gentlemen. His favorite pastimes included travel, watching old westerns, visiting with friends at the airport and providing friends and family with daily internet rumors and humorous emails which were normally forwarded from other friends. He will be missed by his daughters, Aleta Riggs-Harroun of Albuquerque NM, Peggy (Bill) Ritter of Augusta, GA and son, Scott (Michelle) Riggs of Austin TX; grandchildren: Doug and Dennis Harroun, Krishna Dorr, Amanda and Aaron Riggs; three great-grand-children; brothers, Jim Riggs of Lee's Summit MO and Dan(Carrie) Riggs of Cottonwood Falls, KS. and their children, Kathy Herrera and Brad Riggs of Emporia, KS; as well as willing and unwilling members of his daily email Spam list. Bill was loved and respected by those he met and will be deeply missed by all, including the local Emporia Braum's restaurants. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:00 on Tuesday August 5, at the Emporia Municipal Airport with The Rev. Harvey Foyle officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Dunlap Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Bill Riggs Scholarship Fund for Student Pilots may be sent in care of Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.
